Using Undo and Redo in Excel

Using Undo and Redo in Excel

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Using Undo and Redo in Excel”.
In this short Excel video, I’m going to show you how to use the undo and redo buttons in Microsoft Excel. Let’S get started now. Many of you probably think you already know how to use these two buttons that are found here in the quick access, toolbar undo and redo, but chances are you’re going to still learn something new in this article. So here I have a spreadsheet and I’m just going to make a few changes. I’M going to click and drag to select this and I think I’ll go up here to the font group on the home ribbon and I’ll add in all borders and maybe I’ll decide that I want the background color for this particular cell to be different. How about that? Maybe I want to use italicize a little too much. Let’S give the word name, a nice underlined. Look, and maybe I will change the background color on some of these items here and I can even overwrite some of the data. That’S here in the spreadsheet, now, how can I confidently make these changes? That sure seem to be mistakes? Well, the reason why is because in Microsoft Excel, you can easily undo up to 100 actions and there are two main ways that people often use to undo actions that they’ve done in Excel. Probably the most common is to hold the control key and tap Z.

Now, there’s a good reason why this might be the most common method, and that’s because it keeps your hands on the keyboard in general, it’s better to keep your hands on the keyboard and away from the mouse when you’re using Excel you’ll. Just be that much more effective and efficient as you’re using Excel and so contrl Z is a great way to undo mistakes or just to make a different Choice than what you’ve done in the past. Now, if you change your mind instead of control Z, you can hold contrl Y, and that takes you back in the other direction.

Redoing those actions that you did before now, there’s another pretty commonly used method of undoing and redoing, and that’s using using these two buttons that I referred to earlier, that are on the quick access toolbar, and these two buttons undo and redo along with save, should definitely Be there on the quick access toolbar by default if, for some reason they’re not you can click here on this symbol to customize the quick access toolbar and you can put those buttons back on the quick access toolbar. If you want to learn more about that, please watch my other videos on customizing, the quick access, toolbar you’re, going to love, learning about the amazing tools and things that you can add to that quick access toolbar. So I’m going to click here on the undo button and I’ll just click a few times to undo some of those decisions that I’m regretting. I can also redo, but take a look at this.

Something that is often overlooked is that the undo button, and also the redo button they both have a little drop- down arrow or Chevron that you can click on and if you click on it, it will let you jump back more than one step at a time. So, for example, I could go all the way back here to underline and all of those other actions that I had taken have been undone, I could jump back to Borders or even further back now what about redo? It’S the same, if I click on the Chevron. Next to the redo button, I can quickly jump forward to changes that I had made, but then undid now it’s important to know that when you undo certain actions in Excel or just when you make any changes at all in Microsoft, Excel once you’re done and let’s Say you save your spreadsheet and then, if you close Microsoft Excel and come back in the changes that you’ve made will not show up here in the undo list. You won’t be able to undo them because you’ve already saved those changes and they’re.

Now a part of your document, so if you change your mind at that point, you’ll have to just manually make those changes. So really in this article we’ve looked at three different ways to undo and redo. You could certainly use the keyboard shortcuts. You could use the buttons here and the third method is to use the little Chevrons or drop- down arrows to the right of the buttons.
