The buzzwords you’ve been hearing about ar vr and seemingly you can’t go anywhere without hearing metaverse uh. These are all things that we’ve been hearing about a lot recently uh as much of a joke, as some of those have become. They are very real. I guess digitally real, virtually real and some of the biggest names in tech are making a push to make a new real virtual reality and the vision for this future is there and i think, it’s more exciting than ever, but the hardware that will get us there Hasn’T been at least until now, so meet the appara 5k tethered uh. It’S a new vr headset packing some of the best tech that i have ever seen and all in a package that you can order like right now, so you’ve probably never heard of a part. Honestly, i hadn’t either, but they are making some most interesting, vr headsets on the market, i’m sure you’ve heard of oculus.
Now you know meta or the htc vive. This is the next generation of that tech, and you can see the next generation-ness uh here. First thing: you’ll immediately notice with the headset uh is the size.
I am used to giant blocks sitting on my head uh as you get with pretty much every other vr headset out there uh, but with the appara, it’s the smallest vr headset. You can get, and i put it on – you can really tell uh. This is something that you can wear for a long long time uh, which is not something i can say for other vr headsets. Another nice thing about this headset is the diopters. So often, if you wear glasses, you have to wear them with the headset, but this has adjustments to make a glasses-free use possible, which is awesome and considering how small this is.
This is important again leading to a noticeably just more comfortable experience. Aside from all of that, though, uh you get all the controls and ports, you’d expect it’s pretty standard when it comes to like that kind of stuff, but we’re sort of just scratching the surface. So, as you guessed uh, this is called a para5k and it’s got the name for pretty obvious reason: uh, it’s the world’s first micro oled pancake solution for vr headsets. So basically, what that means is you’re getting crazy, high quality optics, but in a size that has never been done before, and the micro oled display is packing a pretty dark punch. So it’s got a ppi of 3514 and a ppd of 32, which is super important when you have this blade like this close to your face.
We’Re obviously used to seeing oleds and phones and tvs in short, getting dark. Blacks on your phone or tv is obviously important, uh, but nowhere more critical than i think in vr. The goal here is to be as immersive as possible and with traditional led displays like a lot of headset.
Have dark is never black. You always get that kind of gray with the backlight with this, though, you are looking at black, it is actually black. It helps make the world you are looking at in vr. Just feel more real oled is just like one small part of that, though, is also packing a combined 5120 by 2560 resolution.
Again, that’s 5k and the resolution is has been a pain point of vr headsets. When you put a display this close to your eyes and then magnify it resolution matters, i think there more than anywhere else having a 5k display means everything just looks more natural and less digital. It’S also fast. It supports a refresh rate of 120 hertz and you won’t get any sort of screen door effects to be seen with other sort of vr systems. So what it comes down to is the apar 5k is, i think, sort of the first step in showing us the next generation vr headsets are going to be, and i am here for it. I’Ve played with vr before i’ve tried vr before it was never a long-term experience.
For me, it always weighed down on my head. It hurt the bridge of my nose, it was fun, but it wasn’t something i could use for a long time. This is changing that narrative, okay, so that’s all the spec stuff. Let’S actually try it out.

Let’S close to your eyes, nuts, like the resolute 5k on any side screen, is crazy, but, like this close to your eyes, looks unbelievable. Like the amount of detail you can see like you touch walls, you get the feedback. Am i in the metaverse? Yet i’m in? What’S up, where are you all right, so i do maintain the times that people look the most ridiculous on camera is when you take video of somebody doing vr or somebody taking a selfie of themselves. So can i take a selfie of myself nvr and you can mine it that way, cool.
This looks unbelievable. I’Ve done. You know, vr from other headsets before and always looked good, but seeing like this level of resolution being spread out amongst 360 degrees is awesome. So one of the coolest features with this thing i think about to use it with your phone uh.
Usually, you would need like a big fatty computer with tons of power to use a vr headset, so you just plug it in over usb launch the app on your phone, and now you can watch streaming videos you can watch local files. Honestly. This use case is probably one of my favorites one of the reasons i used to love sort of the old google cardboard headsets, where you can sort of put your phone inside and sort of see that content. This is just like leveling that up. I love to watch tv shows and movies, and again this is a new sort of more immersive way to do it, and when you find what you want to watch you basically i mean you are sitting in your own private movie, theater. Those are a lot of pauses for apara, where they really start to shine and flex when you plug this thing into a computer, so obviously to get the best vr experience you’re going to want a powerful rig to get the best graphics.
We’Re also going to want controllers to actually interact, so the apara works with htc vive 1 and 2 bass station controllers, which is awesome. It also works with the valve index, so you’re getting really high quality tracking experience, plus you might already own those. So you can just swap out the headset and get going so the gaming experience with this headset um it’s head and shoulders the best that i’ve had in vr. After some, like less than stellar gaming sessions with earlier vr headsets, i have generally stopped using vr and lost interest in it. But with this tech it is noticeably better and noticeably improved and that’s awesome and i know it’s become a joke about metaverse.
You know metaverse and metaverse, while mediversity in the meadowverse seems to be every headline that you see in every newspaper and website right now, but it is a thing: that’s coming, things are going, virtual games are going virtual, we’re stuck at home and it’s a way to Sort of experience the world and a new world and you’re going to need hardware that can match that experience and aparra is the first company. That’S bringing that next generation experience kind of bringing what vr was always supposed to be, but the hardware was never there. This is the first time i’ve used it where the hardware was there and it was awesome.
