Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “SEGA Genesis Mini — History, Unboxing & First Play Reaction”.
Hello and welcome to tech deals. I’M your host muse today we’ll be looking at the sega mini, but before we do, i do want to delve into the history just a little bit with you guys in 2016, nintendo released the nes classic, with great fanfare, introducing classic nes games to a whole new Generation who never had a chance to play them in the 1980s nintendo followed this up with the snes classic one year later, in 2017., many gamers asked would sega follow suit. For years, sega has licensed their name and technology to third-party companies like at games who made cheap clone consoles and pre-loaded games. However, the quality was at times uneven and distribution could be limited.
Two years after the snes classic launch. We finally have our answer in the sega genesis mini a very similar size and featured unit to the pair of nintendo retro consoles this one coming with 42 games and being made by sega themselves. Now i actually never owned a sega genesis myself.
It is one of the very few systems we skipped over. We went from the nes to playstation 1 to nintendo 64 to playstation 2 xbox, gamecube, xbox, 360, wii and so on, but i can still appreciate the mini games that re-released on playstation and xbox that i now know were re-releases now before we get into our beloved Pixelated scheduled programming again be sure to check the video description for the amazon and ebay links. The 16-bit sega genesis released in 1989 more than a full year before the super nes hit north america shores. The genesis wasn’t really meant to compete with the nes so much as crush it outright. It was getting ahead of the launch of the super famicom, the name of the snes that was about to launch in japan, so sega knew that was coming back then consoles launched at different times and often different years in different countries.
Genesis launched october 1988 in japan in august 1989 in the u.s snes launched november 1990 in japan and august 1991 in the us, so we got stuff a little later if you miss this jump and want to play such classics, this is a great option. It is actually made by sega meant to compete with the nes and snes classic this time and comes with 42 games pre-loaded. There is sadly, no official way to add more games to this list.
However, many gamers looking for a taste of the late 80s and early 90s classic console gaming experience may be perfectly happy with the selection on offer. It is, however, not to be confused with the at games cologne, which was licensed by sega but not made by sega. Other options exist like the modern, real sega genesis clone in that it takes the original cartridges, but it isn’t really a genesis. It is just compatible with one while the atgames console does have the cartridge to play the original games. The point of buying the actual sega product is to get that quality be legal and to have something that actually looks like the original genesis. Of course, you can find original genesis consoles on ebay, but those are becoming expensive and buying original cartridges. Likewise is very expensive, so that’s really for the purist, who must have the real thing. I myself, i’m okay with just playing these other versions of the original games that feel just like you’re playing the original games. So without further ado, let’s go ahead and open up this box.
Alright. So now we get to open these all right, so we have our little usb brick here, for our power seems to be a little more reasonably sized than some of the other bricks is what i was looking at there. I’Ve had some bricks that are just ginormous and they take out multiple outlets just for funsies, so the smaller brick is nice see here i swear gaming companies act like they don’t know that we plug all of our consoles into one big power strip behind our tv Yeah we do and we need to be able to put plugs right up next to each other on that power strip.
It’S very handy to be able to use all of the outlets in the power strip all right and we have our first controller and as you see here, it’s got the three buttons instead of the later generations had like six um, but you can order the six Button controllers, if you want to um the other thing, is they have wireless controllers available for sale online, but this one does come with a much longer cord than the nes control? Oh, my goodness much longer cord than the nes controllers did um. So that is handy for sure. Let’S see what else we have in our candy dandy box, a second controller, pretty courteous of them pretty considerate there uh the nes, definitely only came with one controller, so you had to order your second as if most people playing these games, weren’t playing multiplayer, and so Many twisty ties, my goodness.
This is twisted very many times very aggressively. All right, see here, alrighty, that’s our power cord, i’m sure sure what it looks like see. What else is in here? Okay, oh, it’s so cute! This is our little system. It’S so cute. Look at that tiny little play cartridge slot. Okay, so if you have little ones keep this out of reach because i can guarantee you they’re gon na play with and break this little fake slot.
Guarant, like you know, granted it’s not a functional cartridge slot. So it’s not the end of the world, but if i were a kid i would 100 be sticking some skittles in there, but it’s adorable and pretty neat that it functions like that. But not you know, it obviously doesn’t play the cartridges because it’s way too small to do that, but it’s adorable all right. Let’S set this guy over here.
Oh, we still have more in the box. Do you want to take the box away just yet? Let’S see manual and as i said before, i don’t i like to declutter. If i keep manuals, there’s just far too many things that i have to keep up with and these days you can google it. So i don’t really hold on to my manuals, because i just google, it yeah all right, let’s see here and all right, there’s our hdmi cord that comes included. It’S also nice and long all right, that’s everything that was in here.
I don’t know why. I’M looking like ooh what else i guess i did pull out everything that technically the box says is in there. So i don’t know what i expected to find in the box, but that’s everything.
Now i’m gon na get my portable monitor to hook this bad boy. Up to so, we can play some of the games all right so now that we’re all set up, let’s see what we’re looking at this one has 42 games installed on it and it’s so cute. It’S like the original in miniature form, like i said, there’s a little cartridge, but it doesn’t function, but it’s super cute. It has two controllers instead of one as opposed to the nes, and these controllers are the three button controllers, not the six button, but you can order those, and you can also order wireless controllers for the system.
It has an awesome game selection. In my opinion, i am just fond of the nes because it is the first system that i ever had so i grew up with it and i didn’t know about the sega genesis until i was in middle school. But that’s just me. It also has the save option, so you can save and pick up where you left off.
You can save before hard bosses and then try them over and over, which is awesome and you don’t have to have a safe state for it. So it has that same update as the nes all right now for road rash. Two, i don’t know if i’ve ever played robots too, but i do have a road rash growing up. I remember running over a lot of old, ladies, and they would hit me with their purse and it was hilarious.
So, let’s give it a go. Oh the middle button is go not a but b interesting. I would think the go button would be the main. Like first button, you push the a all right, all right: okay, okay, okay, i still, i still just roll my thumb to the right to punch.
So that’s nice, it’s a nice location for that! Oh these guys! Oh, no, oh! No! Well i handled that situation. Well, i must say i am very curious what this has to offer toe jam and earl from 1991, the funkiest guys in space explore the bizarre planet earth in this roguelike action. Game use gift-wrapped power-ups to keep yourself out of trouble. While you look for parts to repair your spaceship. Okay, oh my god that reminds me of rocco’s, modern life.
That super does: okay, okay, okay, oh wow! Am i really just uh collecting things? Okay? Okay! Oh! Do you see the little booty when he crawls out of the water? That’S that’s an adorable little alien dish there. Strangely with only two buttocks, but three legs. You see this.
You see this two buttocks three legs, so it’s an interesting choice. Hey! I found some money. Also is this them being on earth because i don’t remember earth looking like this moldy cheese, i wonder what i use that for all, right, so being as i still have no idea what i’m doing in this game, i’m going to play another one for you guys.
Oh earthworm gym. I remember, but don’t remember this at all: okay, okay, new junk city, okay, oh that’s! So fun, yeah! That’S what you get get you with my wormy head! Oh! Oh! Oh! He does not like that good to know good to know. Maybe i’m supposed to hang onto that chain somehow! Well, my bad okay! Well, you can stay there.
Oh, i just launched a cow that was cool. I appreciated that didn’t appreciate that bird rude rude much! Oh, that’s! Fine! Oops! Where am i trying to go right now? Oh, my gosh, it just took another. Try i see. Okay, this is cool oops. So, overall i think the controls are better um. The games i chose to play probably could have done a better job of saying where to go, but i guess that’s just older games.
They were just harder in general. Honestly, a lot of older games, i think, are just a lot harder than the newer games in that you’re just supposed to play them until you figure out what you’re supposed to do, whereas most newer games, it’s pretty like clear and set forward for you. So it’s it’s interesting, but as a system as a whole, comparing it to the nes that i got to play recently. Um the controls were a lot more responsive, i would say, and the select screen was a lot nicer other than that it’s very similar.
It does also offer more games to play in a wide range of games. A lot of games that were, like, i said, be released later on other systems. So you have a wide array of games to play on this one compared to the nes, but other than that, i guess that’s really all i have to say about this system. I think it would actually be a great buy it’s not as over market as the nes and i actually enjoyed what i got to play other than i probably need to look up.
Um some things as far as like, where i’m supposed to be going and things like that, it kind of it reminds me of original metroid that i got to play the other day where you don’t know that at the beginning, you have to go left to get The orb to be able to crouch down and roll through little bitty caves and tunnels and stuff. Otherwise, you get to like the second screen of the game and you can’t go anywhere because you can’t crouch, because you didn’t go left at the beginning, which, how would you know to do that, especially when it’s laid out as a side scroller? And you kind of it kind of looks like you should go right. I don’t know um, so i had to look that one up for sure.
