Pitches with Prototypes: MOTI

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Pitches with Prototypes: MOTI”.
My name is nicholas stedman and i’m with motif. Oh my god, all right here we go um. So i want to start by telling you about the first robot i ever made this. Is it hopefully the video starts.

So this is a robotic blanket. It was called the blanket project um it thrived on top of a bed and people who got on this shared the surface of the bed with it it could crawl on top of them and wiggle around. So it was a really fun project. I enjoyed it at the time um. I learned a lot through it um, but it also chewed up like a good i’d, say two or three years of my life trying to perfect it um, and from that experience i learned two really valuable lessons.

Well, that’s the second one: let’s go back first, making robots is really hard. I mean, if you guys, have made one yourselves. You know maybe something doing something really basic or using an example. A tutorial. You could do that pretty quickly, but doing something with any. Like modicum of complexity, um can be very, very challenging. I mean every time you you try, there’s coding to do, there’s a mechanical design and there’s uh electronic design as well. The second lesson i learned is that there are a ton of good ideas waiting out there lurking the back of people’s minds.

I learned this from talking to you know various people and i got to show this robot off, and i was convinced that if there was an easier tool set that made it faster to iterate through ideas and bring your your project to fruition, that more and more People would gravitate towards building their robots building robots and making all that science fiction actually reality. So this is our solution to this space. It’S called moti and moti consists of motors that you can control from a browser, so the browser can reside on your tablet or your phone or your raspberry pi. For that matter, i’m going to go into some more details about it later, but first i’ll tell you the three main communities we’re interested in here we’re interested in doing this for designers i mean whether you be a maker and you’re making a tool like the uh.

The very cool electronics factor you just saw or you’re interested in making products with that those rapid prototyping technologies such as new prosthetics or toys, whatever needs to move, you can imagine, with modi being able to print something out in 3d and slot in one of our Motors and instantly have a functioning prosthetic come to life. We’Re also interested in visual displays, whether they be in art, galleries or storefront windows. Second, community we’re interested in is developers we’re very excited about the internet of things and the prospect of bringing uh software uh, bringing it in together with hardware devices, and so we wanted to make a tool that was made that really easy. So using a web api.

You can do things now like make games that interact with toys. Finally, we wanted to make the third d devious kids. We wanted to make a product that was so easy to use. It was just innately fun because you could make something really quickly and then feel quite some satisfaction from making a robot and by doing that, be motivated to learn more about stem science, technology, engineering and math.

So, let’s see if the video starts here, this is a quick demo of moti. It consists just of a motor. All you need to do is add power and then take our app using intuitive graphics such as sliders and dials. You can quickly instantaneously, bring motion to life, and so it shows you how quickly now you can start to prototype robots in just 20 seconds here we can put together a remote control vehicle which, as everyone knows, who’s ever tried to build.

Something might have taken. You well something like this would be rather quick, but something anything more complex would take you days, weeks or months. So again, we wanted to help bring make it the process much easier, so we also make it possible to use things like designers tools such as timelines. In order to edit motions and sequence complex robots uh together, so i just want to say that we’re outside there and really hope you’ll come visit us if you’re interested in this area and uh we’re especially interested in connecting right now with manufacturers we’re at that stage.

We’Ve gone through the prototypes also with investors and retailers. So thanks for your time really appreciate it. .
