Pitches with Prototypes: Haptix

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Pitches with Prototypes: Haptix”.
You know i recently read an article that said that multi-touch um has replaced the keyboard that multi-touch has dethroned the mouse and the keyboard as the defacto way of using a computer. We now live in a wall of swipe to unlock and pinch to zoom good afternoon. Everyone i’m darren at theo, fellow, along with my partner lai, who was one of the youngest engineers at intel and today we’re here to talk about multi-touch, all right um, as you can see, has anyone noticed that multi-touch only works on screens? That is, you have to look at something to be able to touch it. For instance, if you have an ipad, you hold it like this, you look down and your neck hurts or if you have a touch ultrabook you reach out and your arm hurts and even in both these cases, your hands already cover half the screen today. We’Re here to talk about multitouch, but not in the way we know it. What i have here is haptics a device that can enable multi-touch on any surface. This small bar can transform any surface, such as a screen keyboard or table into a multi-touch interface.

You can hook it up to a computer and be able to control your computer from there. For instance, i can hook it up to my laptop right here and be able to control my computer using my keyboard. You can see here that the coordinates on the surface are perfectly aligned with the coordinates on the screen. So if i touch on the right corner of the screen, uh sorry right kind of the surface, my finger shows up on the right corner of the screen. Okay and what’s even better when using haptics, even before my hands, touch the surface, i see these little circles that represent my fingertips that show up on the computer display that tell me you know the spatial relationship between my fingers and the graphical user interface. Now, on tablets and smartphones, it’s very easy for users, users to pinpoint the icons they’re trying to select because their fingers are directly above the icon icons.

Now haptics has this exact same advantage when using haptics a user’s fingers are virtually hovering over the icons themselves and one of the most exciting applications. We’Re envisioning for haptics is actually using it on the computer keyboard now. Imagine like tracking the computer keyboard with this thing that you can use the computer keyboard for typing as well as touch input your hands.

Your lazy hands will never have to leave the keyboard to reach for the mouse or the touchscreen ever again, and this is very, very comfortable and ergonomic and oh and of course, all the people who bash windows 8 for its usability issues on non-touch uh computers. Well, this is this: isn’t a problem anymore with haptics, because haptics can transform every computer into a windows, 8 compatible touch computer and, of course, haptics uh, actually discerns between your uh keystrokes inputs and your touch input so that when you’re actually typing, you won’t get random Touches all over the place, and you know what else this will be great for smart tvs. I guarantee that virtually every view about smart tvs complains either about the unreliable gesture control or an overly complicated remote control.

However, imagine if you could place haptics a small bar on a coffee table on a desk and be able to use your tv like a tablet or if your dishes uh, if your hands were dirty from doing the dishes or eating chips. And you didn’t want to touch your remote much just your tablet or your computer. What, if you could have haptics control, um, put multi-touch on a less valuable surface and be able to use it to control your any other screen? You wanted all right a little bit off alignment, but imagine it being able to control on any other surface. It’S um.

The bottom line is multi-touch is great. It’S intuitive in that you can touch what you see and it’s meant for serious computer usage and that you can rest your hands on the surface instead of waving it or holding in the air like gesture control. However, today’s multi-touch isn’t perfect um and we’re taking a step to fix that um with haptics. You can have an intuitive and ergonomic touch. Experience anywhere you want it to be. It is, oh sorry, touch free. Thank you. Thank you.
