Making Fun: The PiLarm

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Making Fun: The PiLarm”.
My older son gets upset when he comes home from school to discover that his little brother has been playing in his room and making a mess. He asked me to help, so i told him that together, we could build an alarm system to deter his brother from sneaking in my intent with this project is to use a problem relevant to his life, to make learning about electronics, more fun and more meaningful. After learning the names of the different alarm system parts, we played a matching game and learned how the inputs and outputs of the alarm system are similar to the inputs and outputs of a person. We’Ll start the build with this project box from radioshack, we’ll drill all the mounting holes before adding the components the system will be controlled by raspberry pi with a wi-fi dongle.

This usb camera will take a picture of the intruder that will be emailed and tweeted. A revolving light from party city makes a great visual indicator. A tip-120 darlington transistor will allow the pi to control the light.

A passive infrared sensor will detect motion. This keypad will arm and disarm the system we’ll mount a speaker in the box to play siren sounds from the raspberry pi. This permafrodo from adafruit will connect the speaker, amplifier flashing, light leds motion sensor and keypad to the raspberry pi. A usb jack dongle mounted to the box will relieve strain from the raspberry pi’s usb jack. My son and i worked out a rough draft of pictosudo code, which i translated into python. While he slept after programming and debugging, we are ready for a full system test system. Armed, please exit now, let’s send in the intruder motion detected. Please enter your passcode authorities.

Have been notified of your intrusion, please surrender peacefully. In case we don’t hear the siren sound, an email is sent with a picture of the intruder and the picture is tweeted for good measure. My code is easily modified for other uses. I could be a room monitor that detects curfew breakers.

Please go back to bed. I could quiz your kids at math to arm the system. Please enter the sum of five and ten. I could keep your pets off the sofa bad kitty, bad kitty. I could serve as a simple house alarm while you’re on vacation. Don’T let me have all that fun whip up your own alarm system and see what you can do. .
