Live at SXSW: Oreo CNC Machine

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Live at SXSW: Oreo CNC Machine”.
I don’t know about you, but i absolutely love oreos, and i hear that here you can make your own custom oreo and there’s some pretty cool technology behind it. Let’S go take a look all right, so i’m here with steve who helped make this whole project happen. What do we got here? We have custom oreo, vending machines. What we’re doing is we’re tracking the top trends on twitter. We have an algorithm that converts those trends into custom, cookie, flavors and colors.

So you get a custom taste experience based on. What’S trending on twitter, can we check it out yeah, let’s go check it out all right, so matt this is the trending ui. This is our welcome screen, so you just tap it to start um we’re gon na go through and see what else is trending today. Um, maybe it’s such great, that’s just great yeah, because cosmos is coming back right. So here’s the oreo that we’re gon na get and we’re gon na hit make the cookie. So so now you can check it out. This is actually a transparent touch screen. So we have an ir bezel that goes around to track touches.

We can actually pick up to 20 touches with this one, and then it’s actually a traditional lcd screen. If you want to make one of these on your own, you can take about take apart. A tv get rid of the backlight and then, if you look closely around the edges, you can see we have 15 or 20 fluorescent tubes lighting up the inside of this, so that you can see through the screen. Also this carousel, that is rotating, doing our custom.

Flavors and colors is similar to an fdm 3d printer like a makerbot or a cube or maker gear, so we have 12 different pneumatic pumps, so that’s similar to fdm, except for instead of pushing a filament we’re using air to press on a cylinder. So you can see we’re doing a pie shape right now we can do bull’s-eyes, pies, swirls and stripes, and the algorithm that’s sort of watching. What’S trending on twitter, actually tracks sentiment, recency, relevancy and geography to come up with a custom taste experience for your oreo there’s. Also four cookie droppers in there.

Oh, this looks great. Can you show us what’s going on inside see behind the scenes yeah? So these are the air compressors that drive the machines. Each one has a main line that goes to the machine. We have a 5 micron filter here to just pick up air out of to take any air or rust that might be coming from the tanks.

There’S another 0.1 micron filter 0.01 micron filter inside to take out any bacteria or viruses that might we might pull out of the air and then there’s this smaller line. That goes in that we use for a priming pump whenever we load the cartridges with cream. We have to drive all of the air pockets out of it before they can go into the robot. That’S always the priming pump for so this is back of house for oreo trending vending, and you can see here the back of the machine. We have a carousel. That’S got that we custom built, has 12 different cream heads for different flavors and colors.

We can’t see them right now, but the cookie heads are right around the back, so the cream comes out through here and then and our um air compressors out back are actually running air into these controllers. So we have down pressure and then we also have back sucks. So when we want to put flavor down we’re, putting it down with positive pressure, then when we’re going to stop a color, we actually reverse it with negative pressure. I spotted a raspberry pi there. What’S going on here, yeah, so all the electronics driving the whole machine are off this board down here with a raspberry pi and a teensy. We also have a delta bot style platform for our x y and z, control of the cookie.

We put a custom cookie platform on that, so we can hold on to the wafers. While we move the cookie around underneath the print heads, so we have 16 print heads. This is the primary stepper motor that drives the carousel. You can see our admin ui that we built down here in c-sharp.

That’S how we kind of track, what’s going on with all the electronics and the motor status, all in all how how long did this all take? We built these prototypes in about six weeks. We started in the middle of january with a eight person team at maya design and laser lab in pittsburgh pa. So we have kind of a. We can kind of see what people see out front and we can drive that.

So that’s the this is what we use to kind of find out. What’S going on with the actual vending machine. This is what people use out front to order cookies, so they can see what’s trending now and we can maybe pick pick something. Maybe we’ll pick a sciences grade, oreo is what we had before.

We could either make the cookie, or we already saw that out there. So maybe we’ll do remix here. You can see the circles stripes, wedges and swirls, so we can kind of change our cookie design. Based on that, we can also change up some colors. Maybe i want to swirl and then we can hit make cookie. Now you can see the machine is going to go and make that so, thank you so much for showing us inside there.

What’S the reaction been like here at south by southwest it’s been tremendously positive, everybody loves oreo and then, on top of that to have a custom taste experience be made right in front of. You is really a pretty magical thing. Everybody loves it great.

Thank you. Yeah. Thank you.
