Laney College Dodecahedron

Laney College Dodecahedron

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Laney College Dodecahedron”.
My name is matt trocker and i’m representing laney college in oakland, california uh our our maker space is called the fab lab and we built a dodecahedron using a cnc router and a laser cutter. There’S uh over 700 pieces in this big puzzle and no screws are holding it together. We did this to show off the kind of maker education that we have right here in the bay area. Students can come in and learn how to use new advanced manufacturing techniques, but also some of the traditional skill trades like welding or machining, wood, tech or carpentry, or even cosmetology, or culinary so.

People who like to to make things there’s a lot of career paths out there and we wanted to share those. So this design stemmed from one of our students, you can actually sneak under and see, see this little model right there. That looks like a soccer ball.

One of our students wanted to make a speaker, and so it started with a tiny little desktop speaker and it turned into a big exhibition for the maker faire. It’S one of those things we just made it because we could um it’s it’s made out of plywood plywood that we cut out hundreds of hours on a cnc router. Then it took a lot of other sanding with a uh by hand to get the pieces ready. Uh and then it’s uh, it’s a dodecahedron, but only 12 10 panels out of plywood and it’s it was it’s a cool big puzzle. There’S really no reason for it other than we just had fun doing it. Here.

It’S going to have a permanent home at laney college, we’re going to use it as an exhibit to to get better word out on campus about all kinds of making education that we have, and it’s gon na also live right out in front of our brand new Fab lab it’s one of those things that uh, it seems like a kind of daunting project as you do it, and then you get it up and you bring it to the maker faire and you walk around and you see what everyone else is doing. It makes you think, oh man, we could have done so much differently or we could have made it bigger and better or more engineering going into it, so it just it just makes you want to do more. The next time, .
