Jesse Genet: Make Tools, Not Products

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Jesse Genet: Make Tools, Not Products”.
I’M here at makercon with the ceo of lumi jesse janae, you just got off stage and you had an excellent talk. Can you tell us what you were talking about yeah, so i gave a talk called make tools, not products, and i kind of walked people through how at lumi we’ve pioneered this way to print fabric using sunlight, and now we sell kits all over the all over The country and all over the world, but originally i developed this process so that i could print things at home and i could make my own products and eventually we realized that the more powerful thing to do would be to release it so that we could see What everyone does with it, but that’s not an easy thing to do. Sometimes it’s like letting go of your baby. It’S like you, develop this technology. You don’t want to share um, but the power of sharing that can be immense and you gave some good examples of other people. Who’Ve done that. Can you tell us about that um. I remember the example that i came. Do you remember levi strauss? Yes yeah, so an example i gave you know going back into history is: is levi strauss most people don’t know that during the california gold rush in the 1860s he set up shop in california, um actually selling. You know what we now call blue jeans and pickaxes and the supplies that the miners use and he built his fortune, and he built an incredible company selling the tools that the people around him needed, as opposed to searching for gold himself great and now you’re. You now you have more products coming out.

You have an app that has a service. Can you tell us about that too yeah? So, in addition to our diy kits, um, which the most expensive kit is 40 dollars, so we really try to make the process approachable and we have a free, lumi app it’s on the app store as well as for free on our website. It allows you to take any design that you want to put on fabric or on our t-shirt. It allows you to turn it into a negative, which is what you need for lumi printing, and you can print that at home or order that negative from us.

For seven dollars so again, making it just so easy, easy and and approachable for people to do at home. It’S all about the tools, it’s all about the tools and also just making them accessible. So you can reach a lot of people with your idea, as opposed to having a few products that maybe only are expensive and can only be purchased by some well thanks for being here at makercon and having this interview. Thank you. .
