How to make your own shoulder puppet Groot

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “How to make your own shoulder puppet Groot”.
I’M going to show you how to make one of these simple little shoulder puppets out of pretty much anything. Although a stuffed animal would probably work best. What you’re going to need will be a brake, cable and a stuffed animal stuffed animals work best because the floppy throat area – you know you need something flexible. But if you’re going to use something like a 3d printed object which doesn’t have a flexible neck, then you’ll have to use a piece of cloth or leather or something like that. As long as it can bend and twist here’s the basic principles, you have a head with a flexible neck here, and this is just something so that you can see it. Turning it’s attached to this brake line. As I push on the brake line, you can make the head look up and down and as you twist it you can make the head look around.

I thought that group would be a perfect thing to use for this after seeing it on Rocket Raccoon shoulder. So I downloaded a copy and printed it out. You can find links to this in the description below after I printed it out.

I had to cut off the base of the head and then drill out groups body to accept the brake line. Let’S add the brake line right through the hole and then hot-glued it in place, careful not to get the hot glue in the way of the actual brake cable. And then I glued the hinge that I use on the back of the neck in place.

For the head, I put a small piece of wood in there to help stabilize the internet brake line. You can see how it all goes together here. I was afraid it would twist in place and just the plastic that wood was there to help.

I hot-glued all that into place as well and once that was secure, hot gluing, the back of the hinge on and trimming it up. Let it to work here is my first test where I knew I’d be able to move this head around a 3d printed object. Is really not ideal for this? It was heavy and didn’t work quite as well as I had hoped I attached some velcro on for strapping.

Did a quick camera test to see if you’d be able to see them looking around and sure enough you could for then it was time to paint them. A quick spray down with primer gave me a base coat to work with. On top of that, I put a layer of dark brown, and then, on top of that, I put a layer of lighter brown and the dark brown shows in all of the cracks stuff. For this final shot, I burnt a hole in some cardboard. It spray painted it black. I wanted to emulate the trailer pretty hard way.

Okay, so let’s take a few minutes to look at this little fella and talk about ways that you could do a better job than this one. I learned several things doing this. One of the ones, as I mentioned before, is that 3d printed things aren’t really ideal because they’re heavy stuff, the animal head, is a lot of use here when I redid the neck on this to cover up that wire, I really limited the mobility.

It’S very very difficult to turn the neck on this one, as you can probably see as I’m moving it around in the video. I really liked how the velcro works as strapping. It looks okay on me if I were wearing a costume, it would blend right in. Although you could cut slits in your costume and hide that inside your clothes, in which case the velcro might be a bit itchy leather would also work and be easy, but velcro was the easier now tips to make it better on the end. That goes in your hand, you’re going to want to add a dial or something so you can twist it that twisting motion is what turns the head and without the ability to twist it very easily you’re going to have a hard time turning the head now. One mistake I made on group was that I mounted the brake cable straight into the head: the little nubs just perfectly straight up in there, if you curved it, so that the cable comes up and does this and then you mount it that way, then the turn Is more pronounced and it’s easier to make it turn those two tips could help. You build a much better version and get much more realistic motion, but I have to say, I’m really have with how this one came out, especially for how quick it was to build.

This took me only maybe a few hours, not including the time it took to print the file. Someone commented on one of my videos that they didn’t realize that we also have a magazine. I just got my latest issue today, so be sure to check it out and if you’ve never seen it before, which I find hard to believe make the YouTube channel.
