Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Gigabyte Aero 15X – Best Gaming Laptop Ever?”.
What’S up everyone how’s it going! This is watch hope you guys are all doing well and today we’re going to talk about something that could be potentially the best gaming notebook available right now, specifically the gigabyte arrow 15x. Now the arrow 15 has been around for quite some time now, but they’ve just recently updated with the x version as the brand new 8th generation core i7 8750h processor. That’S the full desktop grade 6 core 12 threaded cpu, as well as a desktop grade. Gtx 1070 and a whole bunch of other cool factors, including a very sleek and minimalistic design. That i think i’m a huge uh fan of personally – and i think most of you guys will like it as well we’re going to talk about the goods the bads and see if this is truly one of the best uh gaming, slash productivity, notebooks that you can Get right now now the big highlight on the arrow 15 definitely has to be this slim overall profile. It’S still a little bit thicker than your standard 15 inch macbook pro at around 18 millimeters, but the macbook pro is only about three millimeters thinner. So it’s not a huge deal considering how much power you can pack into this machine in terms of build quality. It’S pretty good. You have a cnc milled, aluminum chassis and on top you have a polycarbonate shell, which again feels uh pretty durable, but it’s still not to the level of quality as other notebook. Computers in this kind of price range, such as the razer blade stealth, or indeed the macbook pro. Furthermore, since the 15.6 since display has a very slim bezel, it’s actually quite compact in terms of its overall footprint and weighing around two kilograms.
It’S relatively lightweight in terms of battery. We have a 94 watt hour capacity built inside gigabyte recommends you can get up to 10 hours in terms of productivity usage. In terms of my everyday day-to-day testing, i averaged around eight and a half hours, which is certainly not bad for general web browsing uh work related tasks as well as consuming some multimedia related content. If you are gon na game or do anything cpu or gpu intensive, you are gon na definitely sacrifice battery life by a huge margin, and one of the huge factors of this machine is that without the external power supply, you’re gon na sacrifice the gaming performance and The general computing performance by a huge margin, my notice up to 60 to 70 percent decrease in terms of overall fps uh when using it in battery mode. Only and that’s with the high performance mode engage in windows. So definitely, if you’re going to be using this thing, uh from a performance standpoint, you’re gon na, have to be stuck to making sure that the computer is plugged in at all times now moving forward in terms of porsche connectivity options, you have a decent amount on The left-hand side, we have a full-size, gigabit ethernet connection, a usb 3.1 connection, an hdmi 2.0 out, as well as a mini display port 1.4 and a 3.5 millimeter audio out connection. On the right side. We have two usb 3.1, a usbc or a thunderbolt 3 and a full-size sd card slot. Now there’s two types of display options with the 15x: you can either get the 144 hertz hd model or you can get the 4k version. I think, with the cpu and gpu configuration you’re, probably going to have the better experience with the higher refresh rate at the 1080p resolution now in terms of the cpu and gpu configuration.
What we have on this model is the latest core. I7. 8750H. This is a 6 core chip with 12 threads base.
Frequency is about 2.2 gigahertz, but it can turbo up to 4.1. We have 16 gigabytes of ddr4 clocked around 2600 megahertz. You can obviously upgrade that to 32, if you like, and just to give you guys an idea in terms of the actual cpu performance, we’re gon na throw up at the benchmark results for cinebench, as well as at geekbench and you’re.
Taking a look at the center bench, we’re getting over a thousand points which is uh pretty incredible. I’Ve never actually had a laptop that scored that high and the single core and multi-core performance on geekbench is fairly respectable as well. In terms of storage uh, we have an m.2 pci express drive, it’s mvme, so 500 gigabytes in capacity in terms of read or write, sequential speeds, you’re looking about 950 and about a thousand megabytes respectively in terms of read and write, so definitely fast, overall performance there.
As you would expect, and in terms of the graphics processor we’re using the gtx 1070, this is the full shebang with the max q uh design and we’re going to throw up some of our benchmark results, starting with the unigine valley at 1080p. Ultra details we’re getting a 101 average fps and times pi we’re getting about points uh when we’re taking a look at some other popular titles such as far cry 5 at 1080p, as well as fortnite and overwatch. Again, we’re getting fairly high frame rates, as you would expect if you’re gon na use this thing as a competitive gamer. It’S definitely not a bad choice for a laptop uh, for example, at fortnight, pretty much maxed out settings you’re getting about 126 frames per second and overwatch uh over 158 average frames per second. And if you, even, if you’re going to do a little bit of 4k gaming, like i did on my 4k projector uh you’re, going to get around 40 fps for those uh two titles as well, so pretty darn, incredible performance coming out of a fairly compact uh Pc now, some of the final notes that i want to talk about is the rgb backlit keyboard, as well as the trackpad. That’S on at this machine in terms of the keyboard itself, it’s fully customizable in terms of the rgb configuration powered through gigabyte, fusion, really simple and straightforward to get going has a whole bunch of illumination and affection options in terms of the actual feel itself very tactile.
It kind of feels like kind of every kind of chiclet low profile keyboard – that’s out there, so if you’re, a fan of mechanical style keys, you’re not going to really like it, but it’s pretty standard. Nonetheless, now one of my major problems definitely has to be with the trackpad in terms of surface area, it’s fairly large. So that’s not really an issue, it’s just not as touch sensitive and as responsive that i would like, and sometimes the clicks don’t register properly. The multi-touch capability is fairly limited and again not as intuitive and easy to use as other kind of laptops in this price range, and indeed just other laptops in general are getting much better in terms of their trackpad feel.
I still think gigabyte needs to work on it, uh, certainly getting it more responsive and more fluid and dynamic. With your touch sensitivity, i would probably use a mouse uh on a consistent basis than having to deal with a trackpad. Just on my personal experience. Nonetheless, uh you might feel a little bit different if you do indeed try out the ar-15x trackpad now. Furthermore, as we mentioned before, uh, the battery performance is pretty decent when it comes to just general computing. But if you are going to do anything from a cpu and gpu intensive base, you’re definitely going to be need to be plugged in so the battery performance is fairly limited in those kind of circumstances, but i think most people will compromise with that. Just fine! So not a huge there being a tied to that large brick power supply that comes with the unit overall in terms of the price range. I know it retails for around the 2300 mark on amazon to get this specific configuration which is uh relatively reasonable compared to other notebooks, with this kind of configuration keep in mind to get a 144 hertz 1080p monitor, as well as a dedicated desktop unit with all The specifications that we have over here, the ssd performance you’re, going to probably be in a similar kind of price range factoring in the operating system as well, so uh pretty competitively priced, i’m sure there’s other laptops that will give you just a little bit better pricer Performance ratio, but definitely something to consider if you want a fairly slim profile, ultra portable pc with this kind of performance.
So i would say fairly reasonable and kind of standard in terms of the value standpoint.
