Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Gertie the Jumping Robot”.
Martinez and i’m originally from mexico, but now i live here in uh, east bay, in emeryville, so uh this is gertie uh, it’s gertie, the robot. It’S named after gertie the dinosaur, which was the first sort of uh, a 2d animation that had a lot of personality. In it, so i was hoping you know, i’m hoping that uh gertie is the first robot that has a lot of personality, because i think a lot of robots tend to be kind of creepy, you know and and uh. So i’m trying to take the principles of of animation uh, which is like there’s 12 principles like squash and stretch, and so you can see how soft he is he’s very, very, very soft and, and so what he does is uh.
He just jumps around. So you can tilt them in different directions and uh. He can start walking in which, whichever direction you point him and then uh yeah, eventually he’s gon na have uh an ex uh an eyeball with a screen on it.
This is a bigger version of the same thing: uh and all of the parts that you see in uh in red are 3d printed and then uh. Initially i made a little clay sculpture and i scanned it in the computer made this uh made this computer model, and – and so this is what’s on the inside, and so you can see the arduino pro mini battery uh levels and then from there uh. I 3d printed a mold and then uh cast cast silicone out of it, and so it be it it sort of it’s this stretchy platinum, silicone. I think my my favorite reaction was just this feels alive like just there’s something about it. That feels alive and i think it’s the the you’re not used to seeing this type of deformation. It’S not a very common thing, so it catches your eye and – and i don’t know i had a lot of people say – had a lot of personality and that’s what i was going for. So i love to come to maker faire. Just because it’s it’s! It’S creativity! Right, it’s curiosity, i think curiosity is people that don’t need to be doing things, but they just have to because they’re so curious about it and uh i mean all of this is not for profit, i’m not making any it’s just for fun right. It’S just just to see what happens when you put a little delta robot inside of inside of like silicone and yeah.
