Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Finally, A Case That BLOWS! — Corsair 5000D Airflow”.
Hello and welcome to tech deals case selection for custom pc building can be an interesting process. There are so many factors to consider from manufacturer to size. To purpose. To consider it can seem really overwhelming in front of me: are a pair of corsair 5000d airflow mid-tower atx cases, one in black and one in white. Today, i’m going to explain why i bought these two cases. What the pros and cons are, who should buy? This won’t be a review of all case types options and features, or this video would be five hours long.
Instead, we’re going to start with some assumptions, assumption number one you’re, building a premium custom, pc or you’re, replacing the case of an existing pc that has premium parts and a non-premium case. Second, you’re looking for something in the 100 to 200 price range that is well built, but not crazy, expensive. Third, you want the option to install any size, graphics card, any size, liquid cooler or tower cooler, and all the ram, storage and rgb a pc enthusiast could want and finally you’re not trying to build a tiny little bitty, itx pc or a monster full-size beast. That requires a forklift to move. This is the mid-range that should cover the bulk of custom pc builders. Let me bring the focus back to this specific case for just a minute. Corsair builds a lot of cases from tiny itx to massive full-size towers.
The 5000 series is considered a large mid-tower design, one step below their full-size tower 7000 series corsair also makes the 4000 series, which is also called a mid tower, but it is shorter than the 5000 and it has fewer options internally than the 5000 series does for Less money, of course, now we will not be covering the 4000 or the 7000 series here. Both come in similar configurations to the 5000 series with different variations, but size is the largest difference. Corsair actually makes four different versions of the 5000 series case, not counting color, which actually makes for more than that which provides many options for different builders, starting off at the entry level of the 5000 series, we have the basic 5000d, which looks like these two cases, But it has a solid front for a clean, streamlined look but slightly worse airflow. However, your first thought might be well. That means the airflow sucks right. You’D think that but you’d be mistaken, because corsair is one step ahead of you. All 5000 series cases have a side vent allowing for airflow into the case from either fans or a liquid cooler. So you can have a solid front and airflow at the same time, stepping up just a little bit over the entry level. You have the 5000d airflow series, the cases you see in front of you, the internal guts of the cases, are the same.
The difference is the mesh front panel. You lose either a solid front or glass which we’ll get to in a second. But if you want a more standard, airflow pattern, if you simply want into the front out the top and back then this is what you’re looking for.
You can also have insane levels of airflow movement. If you want we’ll talk about fan configurations in just a minute. Moving up one more level you get the 5000 x rgb edition sounds pretty cool, doesn’t it it replaces either the front solid or mesh panel with glass? Why do you want glass on the front of your case? Why just show off the awesome triple 120 millimeter argb fans that corsair includes which actually makes it a pretty good deal, because corsair charges a decent amount for standalone 120 millimeter argb fans? And it is not a big price increase to go to the rgb version of the case, plus it adds some additional glass which aren’t on the lower end cases, something to think about.
Now. You do get some airflow around the edges of the glass on both sides. There’S about oh three quarters of an inch of gap between the side of the panel and the glass that allows air in.
However, it does mean that your primary air intake is going to move to the side of the case instead of the front which we’ll talk about more again in just a minute. Finally, you have the 5000 x rgb signature series, a limited edition with custom graphics printed on the glass in your choice of five different patterns, including this one, which is out of this world. Plus you get three corsair sp 120 millimeter argb elite fans included, which, while this case is not cheap at 250, considering that it has three of corsair’s best fans and custom printed graphics on the glass on three sides of the case.
It actually might be an interesting option if you’re building a custom pc and you want it to be unique. If you want to be special and not like everybody else’s argb build okay granted. This is coming from the factory and other people can buy it, but it is a limited edition and if you want to show it off to your friends, it is definitely a unique look for a custom build. Do you want airflow you’ve got airflow, you could install 10 120 millimeter fans inside these cases and, if that’s not enough for you, perhaps you need a leaf blower in your pc.
You can also install up to four 140 millimeter fans in place of six of the 120 millimeter fans in the front and top. If you want, of course, standard all-in-one liquid coolers are supported. However, where these cases really shine is in the custom, loop, cooling options with room for reservoirs for days now, if you’re going to install a single open loop cooler, maybe for your graphics card or your cpu, then these will be just fine. But if you plan to do a dual liquid custom loop for both your cpu and graphics card, i’d actually step up to the 7000 series for more run to run hard tubes, dual reservoirs and the cables for such a complex installation.
Now, coming back to normal people builds for a minute. You can install a 360 millimeter liquid cooler in the front, a 360 millimeter liquid cooler on the top, at the same time and optionally, a 360 millimeter liquid cooler on the side for alternative air intake. Now you can only install two 360s at once, so the third spot has to be filled with fans, so you can use fans in the front liquid cooler on the side or liquid cooler in the front fans on the side. Both options allow a 360 on the top and then, of course, you have a 120 on the back.
That is a lot of cooling moving around to the back. We have the real treat of this case, the hidden gem, if you prefer, you can install four 2.5 inch, ssds back here, plus two three and a half inch hard drives, while still having room for real cable management. If you do plan to use the 3.5 inch drive cage, however, which is removable, then i recommend the smallest power supply. You can find because it’ll be a real tight, fit behind it with all those power cables. The new evga supernova g6 power supplies are only 140 millimeters long, giving you extra room to work with back here. Yes, corsair makes power supplies and you might be tempted to brand match.
Corsair cases, however corsair’s rmx line is 160 millimeters versus the g6 is 140 millimeters. And yes, if you measure that extra 20 millimeters can make all the difference, there is also a six fan, pwn repeater in the back, which is important if you’re going to connect this many fans. Now it is not an rgb controller and it is not a fan. Controller, it is a pwm repeater, because what it does is allow you to connect six fans to a single motherboard, pwm port and drive those six fans and control their speed from a single setting in your motherboard or in windows.
Depending upon your software that lets you have it ramp up if you need extra, cooling or ramp down, if you would like silence, the front of the case has a power button: two usb 3.0 ports, one usb 3.1 type-c port, a headphone microphone, combo jack and a Reset button that last item is sadly becoming less common on pc cases. I was shocked when i started seeing cases without a reset button. Thankfully corsair isn’t following that trend. Finally, i want to talk build quality. There are 50 dollar cases, 100 cases, 150 dollar cases, and so on.
You tend to get what you pay for in general and that’s doubly true when it comes to cases the 50 mid tower argb cases that look like a good deal are priced. That way, for a reason, their metal is thin. It dense easily, the fans are extremely cheap, the glass is very thin and the whole fit and finish is just cheap all the way around.
Now, that’s fine. If you’re building a budget pc or you’re replacing an oem case – and you just need a box, however, if you’re going premium – and you want something that doesn’t just look good, but it feels good to build in it’s made out of heavy-duty premium materials, and it will Last the test of time, then, spending 150 to perhaps 250 dollars on a corsair 5000 series may very well be the better long-term investment.
