Enriching the Youth of Detroit: Georgia Street Community Collective

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Enriching the Youth of Detroit: Georgia Street Community Collective”.
Say: hey, hey everybody say hi hi. My name is dwayne nelly, i’m the president of the eastside riders bike club, we’re on peter hunt street in detroit michigan. Well, we’re part of the community center around the corner and a bunch of them is older people and they can’t get around and pass out the players to all the parts of the neighborhood. So they get us we ride around. We pass suppliers out, we uh have basketball for the kids and we have uh something to drink for them and popcorn and see here a little longer. You you’ll see them they’re gon na come bring their bikes.

I won’t. Can you fix my bike? You know i’ll be like no, i’m gon na show you how to do it right. Do it for my son to be like move back, i know how to do it.

You know he’s good for that. So been here, 35 years five years and the community center is like what one two and a block over here – georgia street communities – everything just about named after george street on our stuff – and we got george street community garden, which our our organization is called. Georgia, street community collective uh we’ve got more stuff planned for the future, like cleaning up the lots over here we want to um. We want to make like a race car track where the kids can come with remote control, cars and race, and maybe we could put up a couple of basketball, rims or something like i’m like that now, because even though i love to eat it, but i see Everything than grown you know it’s grown now.

It was water all over the street because of the garbage that some of the garbage had washed down and clogged the drain, and i just felt like i needed to clean it up and do something and that that’s literally how it started i mean there was no Other reason just to clean up the lots, but i figured if i planted a couple of rolls of food that that was gon na, be it not knowing that i was really turning it into a park setting. You know people started coming.

We had a bonfire out here and some of the guys that i grew up with said. The only thing was missing out. Here was a tv a couple days later they came with a bunch of wood and power tools and we built a movie screen and we started watching movies. You know somebody that was helping said we.

We got all these kids out here. We need to start doing something, you know with them, so we started to read night where we would read to him and then after we read to him, then we showed a movie. So you .
