DARwin Mini Unboxing: Available in the Maker Shed

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “DARwin Mini Unboxing: Available in the Maker Shed”.
Anna france, here from make today, was the first day that we were on site for maker faire and the shed just got in these new darwin minis from robotis and i’m very excited. I’Ve got the first one here sold in the u.s they’re available from makershed.com and also at maker faire bay area. If you’re down here, i’m going to check one of these out, so i’m going to open it up and see what’s in the box, all right, so here’s what we have we’ve got all these little pins here. We’Ve got mostly pin connectors to snap the robot together and then we’ve got a variety of parts that are all snapped together with the pins.

So we’ve got all these little leg parts. Then we’ve got a main body part and face and head here and then we’ve got a cable, the power and the feet, and some additional leg pieces looks like the leg and arm pieces of both over here in the bottom, we’ve got some decorative stickers to kind Of customize, your robot we’ve also got this rather lengthy. Quick start guide, awesome with really great diagrams and build instructions very exciting.

This looks pretty easy to put together. It looks a lot like the lego, mindstorm type kits if you’re familiar with those, oh and here’s the rest of the pieces. So it looks like those were just the legs.

We’Ve got some small screws, so it looks like we’ve got more than just pin connectors some. Some modules here not sure what that’s for, but we’ll we’ll find out and then whole lots of small pieces. Perhaps this is the arms or connectors to the body more parts.

It’S a little boring see that better there so yeah. So this looks great, i’m very excited, so these robots saw the darwin ops were quite a bit more expensive at around two thousand dollars and with this darwin mini robotis has brought the price down to about 500. So that’s a huge drop in price.

You can also control it with this android phone or tablet app, and it’s got some pre-programmed. Dance moves and kind of gestures like waving and standing up and sitting down. In addition, they’ve also released all of these plastic parts as 3d printed files.

That michael overstreet has posted on thingiverse and you can check them out and download them and then customize your robot completely customize the colors and the textures head shapes hand shapes so uh. This is really exciting. I’M i’m really looking forward to playing with this and getting to know it and then learning more about programming it so stay tuned, we’ll uh we’re going to post a lot of footage from the robot dance team, which will be at maker faire bay area this weekend. A whole bunch of these little guys will be going and you’ll be able to buy this in the shed. We have a limited quantity, so you want to get them early and stay tuned for more from maker faire bay area 2014. .
