Controlled Chaos: Fire Tornadoes

Controlled Chaos: Fire Tornadoes

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Controlled Chaos: Fire Tornadoes”.
Hey this is Caleb with make, and today we’re gon na play with fire tornadoes. It’S surprisingly easy to make a small fire tornado. All you need is a wire mesh trash can on a lazy susan, so you can spin it a container with denatured alcohol inside of it and a few cotton swabs to keep it from splashing around. You should also have a fire extinguisher just in case like this sucker up and give it a spin turn the lights out for better viewing. That is beautiful.

Now, here’s a tip you won’t be able to blow this out and pouring water on it would likely just cause a mess and spread fire on your house, so instead use an empty beverage can or something that fits snugly over the container to snuff out the flame. While this is really cool, if you’re anything like me, you’re gon na want to go much much bigger, you’re gon na need a box fan well. Actually, you’re gon na need a bunch of box fans. It takes at least six to create a good vortex, but really the more the better I’m gon na use 12.

So here’s how it works. We’Re gon na start with a barrel we’re gon na build a fire in that barrel, place all those box fans in a circle around the barrel and tilt them all slightly the same direction as they’re blowing they’re gon na create a vortex that turns our simple fire Into a fire tornado, look at that fire tornado! Look at that for each of these huge tornadoes, I’m using at least an entire gallon of alcohol. Now, I’m sure to have my fire extinguisher close by as well as a hose to miss the ground. If any fire should start to spread whatever you do, don’t throw anything into the barrel, because you will splash fire out man that big fire tornado is incredible in person.

It always draws a crowd whenever I do it, and I want to thank unallocated space, a makerspace out of Severn Maryland, for sharing that idea. Now, if you’re gon na do something like this, you should probably contact your local fire department. They enjoy doing things like controlled burns and cool experiments, especially if you are in an area that has drought. If you’re in one of those areas, you probably shouldn’t be playing with fire outdoors at all, but I’m in southern Missouri, where we’ve had more rain than we know what to do with now, I’d like to pick your brains a little bit.

Controlled Chaos: Fire Tornadoes

I tried to scale this up to a bonfire to get an masse of fire tornado, but unfortunately it didn’t work. It seems like it should, but as you can see, we tried and tried and tried and just couldn’t get the tornado to happen. I’D like to hear your thoughts in the comments below on why that didn’t happen. We’Ve got a few theories bouncing around, but we want to hear what you think be sure to LIKE and subscribe for more crazy videos from make.
