Benedetta Piantella at World Maker Faire New York 2013

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Benedetta Piantella at World Maker Faire New York 2013”.
My name is benederra piantella and i’m a faculty at itp nyu the interactive telecommunications program. So i started using technical skills for humanitarian purposes after the tsunami of 2004, and so after that, i decided to use my skills and my technical knowledge, and also just my love for process, to build solutions for these kind of situations for humanitarian, environmental or social challenges. Worldwide, the first project i ever worked on in this field was a medical device for unicef, which purpose had to diagnose severe acute malnutrition in children under five. I believe that we’re all makers – and i believe that there’s a lot of specifically young people out there that have technical skills or just they’re great thinkers or they’re, tinkerers or they’re learning applied technologies, and i would love to see more of that apply towards solving real Problems not only abroad, but also just locally in their own communities. I think the greatest joy i get out of teaching is knowing that i get to show people a different avenue and also get to shape, maybe what it is that they can do with their tools with their technology with their skill set.

I think, especially especially in humanitarian fields, right now, there’s a lot of need for technologists or for engineers, or for just makers in general to to basically take on these larger challenges and build something for them. So i think one thing that patients teachers use to embrace the unknown and embrace processes and the fact that, although time is relative and things sometimes move a lot slowlier than you would want, there’s a lot to be learned in that process and just embracing what happens And the dynamics and the cultural situations you find yourself in are really important lessons and sometimes really miraculous things happen, while you’re waiting for other things to happen. So you .
