What’S up folks how’s it going! This is watch hope you guys are all doing well. So over the past couple of weeks, we’ve been testing out the asus rog and the razer phone 2.. Now this new emerging market of gaming, centric smartphones, is becoming increasingly popular, and these two phones are certainly leading at this category. Now we’re going to discuss the key differences between the two but, more importantly, we’re going to talk about whether you even need a gaming specific smartphone, something like the xiaomi poco phone has the exact same gpu and cpu configuration similar resolution and even the exact same four Thousand milliamp hour battery capacity, but only retails for under three hundred dollars versus you’re gon na pay, almost nine hundred dollars for the rog phone and under eight hundred dollars for the razer phone.
Two, which begs the question, is: what are you actually paying for when getting a gaming phone besides some fancy rgb lighting and a custom android skin? Well, certainly that’s the case, but you’re also paying for a couple of other things. Firstly, a gaming specific smartphone usually delivers a better than normal audio and video experience. For example, we have upgraded stereo speakers on both rog and razer phones.
They sound tremendously better than most other smartphones out there, but, more importantly, the display refresh rate is typically higher than 60 hertz. So the rog specifically has an amoled panel that can refresh up to 90 hertz the razer phone 2 1ups that by having an lcd ips panel that can refresh up to 120 hertz and given that it has the highest native resolution and a smaller display size of 5.7 inches, it also has the highest ppi count of about 512. internally.
All three of these smartphones are using the snapdragon 845 processor, as well as adreno 630 graphics. You also have eight gigabytes of ram available in all three devices with that being said, you’ll notice that the performance results are not equal across all these devices. In fact, the asus is the fastest.
The razer phone typically comes in second place, and the poco phone isn’t as fast as the other two, which are seemingly using the same hardware, now there’s primary two reasons. For this result, one the gaming phones have better cooling dynamics and, secondly, the processors are being clocked at a higher frequency, thus resulting in the slightly better performance – and this is certainly most apparent on the rog phone, where you can select x mode where it will deliver Higher overclocking frequencies, even beyond what the razer phone 2 can do, thus resulting in these higher performance scores in geekbench and 2, 2 and 3d mark slingshot extreme. Now another facet of a gaming specific phone is delivering more connectivity options in terms of controllers and accessory, and this is again where the asus excels at you can use the squeeze function or the air trigger modes to control more aspect of the games.
Besides, just using the touch touchscreen, you also have dedicated game pads game dock and even that twin view, feature which gives you dual screen: capabilities, which we’re going to test out in a couple of days as well, so stay tuned. For that, the razer doesn’t give you quite the amount of options in terms of accessories and besides just using the passive touchscreen, there’s no other mode of control, that’s built into the device itself now, despite all those factors, we do still have to keep in mind that The razer phone 2 does have the higher refresh rate and after getting used to the 120 hertz, i think everything should be in that high refresh rate, whether you’re playing games or just browsing at the ui 90 hertz is nice and there’s definitely a perceivable difference. Coming from 120 down to 90 hertz and both are far superior than 60 hertz, which are on most smartphone displays these days now, despite all these things, we’ve talked about at the end of the day when it comes to a pure value perspective on things, i don’t Think that these gaming, specific smartphones are worth the money, especially when you have to pay two to three times as much to get these minor advantages.
In fact, i i believe the poco phone is on sale for under 280 dollars. Now, if we had to pick a winner between the asus and the razer, i’d probably say that the more versatile gaming phone is definitely the asus rog.
It certainly has the most advantages, even though it has the slightly lower refresh rate of 90 hertz. I think, at the end of the day, its accessories might be at the selling factor, especially for some people who want a better control interface than just a touchscreen.
