The mesmerizing wave chess at Maker Faire Bay Area

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “The mesmerizing wave chess at Maker Faire Bay Area”.
First off tell us: who are you and what did you bring to maker Fair yeah? I, my name is Jaylen Su, I’m from Ventura California, I’m here with my maker space uh The Idea Center, and we brought a kinetic, sculpture and uh. What is this kinetic sculpture? First then, we’ll ask about the maker space after that uh, the kinetic sculpture is a wave machine. The way it works is there’s a series of cams here at the bottom that move the top up and down. There’S some Lego tiles. On top of that, uh We’ve added some chest pieces, so it’s a chess board.

People can come up and play it and the whole thing is moving. So it’s kind of a challenge. So what was the inspiration to make a wave chess board like why? Why why wave chess the the wave machine itself is inspired by a guy Ruben margan who’s, an incredible artist who lives up in the area? He does these big huge, kinetic, sculpture installations and his work is amazing, so I highly recommend it um and the Lego thing came from a kid who came to the maker space that we’re here with, and he came in one day he’s like. I think Legos would look really cool on top of that, and we said that sounds like a good idea, and so we tried it out it kind of turned into a chessboard and that’s kind of where we got to live.

That’S awesome. I didn’t realize it was inspired by Ruben he’s here today he’s here today. Yeah he’s got art down at like two buildings over he’s demoing today, since the wave chess was inspired by Ruben, marglin and he’s here and he’s demoing in just a second. We ran away from that booth and we’re going to go see if we can catch Reuben’s demo, Reuben marglin, a local artist that does all kinds of waves and Cool Stuff.

Let’S go see if we can see his demo in the middle of this interview about the wave chest we’re running through the crab. We don’t want to miss it. That was really cool, seeing Ruben’s art and I left uh the young man there to talk to Reuben I’ll finish that interview later so you might notice in the video uh the second half of the interview, maybe he’s wearing different clothes or something because it’s like the Next day or something I thought I’d, let him hang out there and talk with Ruben yeah, so uh, okay, um wave chess, it’s got.

How is it driven? It’S it looks like cams and posts like the world’s cheapest Amazon motor is driving the whole thing and there’s a worm gear on it. So it’s all right, um, there’s an HTP drive gear and the rest of them are 3D printed uh and that’s what we’re using to power the whole thing just one motor! Oh, that’s, awesome, very cool! Well, thank you! So much for bringing it now tell us about this maker space like what, where are you guys located and what’s the deal, I heard you guys like help, people start businesses or something yeah tell me about it.
