Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “The OLED Sweet Spot! Sony A80L”.
Of course, this video is sponsored by acorns Amazon has over 6 300 listings for TVs that are those micro LED and a bunch more. But for now let’s talk about the one. Everybody knows oh wait. In particular, I wanted to talk about the Sony a80l.
I think Sony makes them the best TVs going they’ve been getting a lot of attention with their cutie uh OLED sets, but a lot of that technology that made those cutie OLED sets amazing. The past few years has come down in market and you see a lot of technology in this set the a80l, where you’re kind of getting The Sweet Spot of TVs. I think the Cutie OLED for those folks that want to spend the money at the top of the line but you’re getting an amazing set at a really good value now in the regular W OLED world.
So I want to kind of break it down and talk everything about the set, the good and the bad and ultimately, if you should consider getting one Sony did send this TV to us for review, but nothing here is sponsored at all. This is Sony’s newest OLED TV. Obviously this is a TV tech. That’S like been around for a few minutes and because of that, it’s been slowly perfected over the years and also gotten cheaper uh.
The 880l is what’s called a w OLED panel, so you’re getting those sort of perfect blacks and those very bright whites that OLED is really known for in the past and really not that many years ago the biggest knock on OLED was that it just did not Get bright enough for brightly lit rooms, it’s the opposite problem that projectors have, but that is really no longer the case with W OLED you’re, actually getting an incredible image for really any environment. I said you’re getting an incredible image for any environment. Who of me sorry um yeah? I agree. I think the picture actually looks great uh and we’re in a pretty welded room, which is actually the first time we’re filming in our brand new studio. So let us know what you think about that down below and give it a thumbs up for new Studios, but in this well lit room I don’t have any issues whatsoever with brightness or glare. Everything here looks incredibly bright, incredibly vibrant and really smooth and that’s not only because it’s an OLED TV, uh Sony’s doing a lot behind the scenes, and this is like the most marketing speak of marketing speak but Sony’s, calling it cognitive, processor, XR and XR. Clear image and again marking language, but together those will create better depth to every image on screen, as well as offer really improved 4K upscaling, which is, I think, becoming more and more important. As most the content we watch is from streaming services, which are not true. 4K, this helps what you stream just generally look better. You also get things like XR OLED motion which helps smooth out motion and make it look more fluid and XR contrast Pro and XR triluminance Pro that will boost both contrast so as a vibrancy of the colors that are on the screen.
Don’T forget to mention that all these things sort of make the image look really good at the box. I still think you’d benefit from going in sort of tweaking the settings and pictures and turning things on and off to see. What’S going to be best for you, because in all honesty, you pull this thing just right out of the box plug it in. I think it might be a bit underwhelmed actually by the brightness and there’s a lot you can do in settings mitigate this to boost brightness and contrast make it look even better I’ll put in the description down below the settings that we used uh if you’re, not That familiar with TV settings or just want sort of to get a sense of what we were looking at when we filmed this review all right.
So that’s a fair point but, like that’s all TVs right got ta, go and tweak the settings get the best image possible for whatever preference you have, but the point was kind of TV, nerd talk and Sony Market names aside. You need to know is that the TV is going to produce a really great image, no matter what you’re watching and if you’ve been watching my TV videos for a while. A lot of these features probably sound familiar uh. They were all in their sort of top of the line: cutie OLED TVs last year and somebody’s bringing them down the line to their OLED, as well as bringing the price down pretty significantly. Sony was known for years as being like really expensive. It was.
It was dubbed the Sony tanks, but having somebody’s, reducing that premium way down, so bringing this OLED set to six to seven hundred dollars lower than other competing sort of oleds on the market. This is a 65 inch version of aadl and like depending on the time of year, it’s about 22 2300 bucks, although that could go way down with some sales, depending on when you’re watching this video. That is a really competitively priced TV, so you’ve got last year’s top tier Tech that gives you the brightness, where you want it deep black colors, where I think you really need it and which colors no matter what you are watching all for Price. That’S been less than the premium competition out there and on top of that, still needs expanding their available sizes of their OLED line. This one’s 65 inches, but you can get either a smaller 55 a 77 inch and then you absolutely need it 83 inch size did.
I get everything yeah pretty much and with that money that you’re going to be saving with the TV, you could invest it, it could grow and you could do that with an app called acorns now this is sponsor, but I have legit had acorns installed on my Phone and using it here’s proof for years, it’s an app that I’ve trusted and personally used just for Passive growth, a lot of ways you can use acorns. I have it set up really simply. I auto invest 175 dollars a month and I let acorns go through and handle all the picking all the ETF stocks, everything there. You can also put money in through kind of rounding up on purchases. They just make it a very simple and elegant way to grow your portfolio, grow your net worth and sort of, and look at it over a long period of time.
So, for example, I can see if I keep up my current projection by time. I’M 82, how much money I would have in my account. I almost use it like an account for my kids to sort of put a little bit of money in now by the time they would need it when they’re 18 19 I’ll have some money aside that I can give them. Oh without really thinking about about managing your portfolio daily, Acorn sort of takes that leg work out and makes it very simple.
You can get tools and guidance along the way to learn about investing. If it sounds interesting to you head to the link in my description to download acorns now and start investing and saving for your future today, so and with this being OLED you’re, getting that really signature ultra thin design a lot of times with oleds, the bottom half Sticks out a lot more, that’s where they keep all the components of the TV, so we actually kept the design a lot smaller all the way down. So if you want that sort of wall mount this, you can get it really close to the wall for a lot cleaner. Look, but if you didn’t want to wall mount it you can use included, stands like you know, weeded here.
They can be reoriented. Also in three different ways: allow you to sort of have different Heights DC, want more clearance on the bottom. To put a sound bar, wants it more flushed your TV console, uh you’ve got options with the built-in standard and speaking of console. If you have an ex-gen console, This TV has, unsurprisingly a lot of good gaming features. So on the back of the TV you have a lot of i o, including four HDMI ports. Two of them are HDMI 2.14k, so those are 120 hertz capable. So we can display the next gen console’s full capacities and if that just happens to be a PlayStation 5, also made by Sony of course integrates really nicely into your Sony TV. You have access to things like Auto HDR tone, mapping telling the game sort of look as good as possible, so this year, Sony also included a lot of new features for gaming. Specifically, the redesigned gaming menu gives you really quick access to things like turning on and off vrr motion blur uh, even adding a Crosshair. I won’t judge you too much to turn that on. So when you also added something called the black equalizer which allows you to quickly brighten up Dark Shadows, so you can see sort of your character better in Darker games. So obviously the TV looks good.
The screen looks good and it’s got nice gaming features. But if you’re not going to play, look at a sound bar plug in a sound system like how’s the thing going to sound Sony’s been doing this for a while. They have what they’re calling acoustic surface Audio Plus. Basically, just the screen itself is going to turn into a speaker as opposed to just having sort of rear-facing speakers on the back or speakers on the bottom or top like a lot of other TVs, sort of leaving your audio kind of sounding a bit muffled. So this acoustic surface allows for kind of a almost like a subtle 3D Dolby audio effect, so like you’re, watching something where the audio is coming from. The left side of the screen to the right it’ll mimic that surround sound you’ll notice, a very subtle movement of the audio coming from left to right.
When it comes to TV speakers, these are probably amongst the best, but you’re obviously going to get better audio. If you got to go for a real deal, surround sound or a sound bar and besides, to use any of sort of the Sony options for that actually allow your TV to act as an additional Center channel. So that’s kind of pretty cool, so it’ll use that acoustic audio as a center channel, for whatever other Sony speakers you have set up around it. Lastly, it’s worth mentioning also that the ADL is using Google TV, so you’ve got everything that you need sort of built in, so you can stream whatever you want without needing sort of additional Stream box, something that I did notice. I usually don’t use the built-in OS of my TVs, usually I’ll, plug in generally an Apple TV, but if you Roku or Amazon devices it wasn’t holding the settings that I went through and tweaked as well with a set-top box. It did with the built-in app.
So, like the brightness wasn’t quite the brightness that I had set. So if you do opt to pick up an aadl, you find yourself thinking. Google TV is the right fit for you. Using the built-in apps will keep those settings almost completely.
Maybe a software update, you might change it or maybe it’s in my head, but I I’m pretty sure I noticed a difference. In addition to sort of the Google TV they also have built-in Sony, apps called Bravia core, which is Sony streaming platform. It’S going to stream. Select movies at higher bitrate, that’s the same as Blu-ray.
It’S pretty awesome and Bravia core also supports streaming Dolby Atmos, so you really get a more of a cinematic experience. If you decide you want to go that route, it’s kind of the most interesting thing to me about aadl is that the Sony tacks that used to be there is kind of gone. There are certainly oleds way more expensive and some way less expensive, but the ADLs, like The Sweet Spot, are right in the middle and you’re still getting the premium name. The premium Hardware, the premium processing the premium panel and sort of Sony’s know-how when it comes to TVs.
If you are looking for a new set, I think the aadl should 100 be on almost any list and even if you’re in the market for the high-end TVs, you’re looking at a cutie OLED, just look at the aadl there’s a lot of ways that you won’t Notice that difference, especially if you go in and tweak the settings you can get that brightness level up to what you can get with a lot of cutie oleds and if you’re in the market for even a lower set. You might want to look at potentially stepping up to this if it’s within your budget, because you get the best from Sony which ultimately means really the best of any TV manufacturer in a really good looking package and a TV that’s going to the last you for Years and years .
