Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Canon 5D Mark IV Review – Best 4k DSLR Camera?”.
Hey, what’s up folks how’s it going! This is waj hope you guys are all doing well and here we’re going to do a full, a video review for the new canon 5d mark iv. Now i’ve been using the mark iv now for a couple of weeks now been really impressed with it. It’S pretty much the canon dslr that everyone was hoping to get for the last couple of years since the original canon 5d mark ii, which was one of the first dslrs to offer full hd video, and now we have 4k compatibilities as well as some slow motion Abilities as well and uh, basically we’re going to take a look at the camera, what it has to offer specifically for video features. Now this is obviously a great stills photography, camera and a great hybrid camera for both video and still shooters, but we’re going to specifically focus on the video capabilities, because that’s pretty much 99 of what i’m going to be using this camera. For so, if you’re interested in perhaps upgrading to the canon 5d mark iv well i’ll, show you the goods and the beds and we’ll see if it’s right for you now coming from the 5d mark iii, it’s very similar in terms of overall design, the mark iv Utilizes more or less the excellent magnesium alloy construction that also has improved weather, sealing that the mark 3 had. In addition, the button configuration is a fairly similar, so most 5d users should be well at home with the new design.
Now, a great addition to the camera is the 3.2 inch capacitive touchscreen, which has a similar dot count of about 1.6 million dots, so very beautiful display. Canon probably has one of the best uh displays out there and the dynamic range and overall clarity and color rendition of the display has been improved from the previous models as well. Unfortunately, it’s still a fixed display, so, unlike some of the other competitors out there, certainly when shooting a video would have been nice to have a flip out display. But it is going to be pretty much stuck in there and if you do want a more versatile viewing options, you’re going to have to deal with an external monitor. But with that the nice thing is, you do have a clean hdmi out, giving you 422 color sampling, so you can easily record externally, 1080p and of course, have a nice monitor on top of that. So if you want to make this into a full-fledged uh filming rig, this is definitely an interesting platform to start out with now. The sensor is all new: it’s 30 megapixels, it’s still a full frame. The measurement is 36 by 24. It’S using the new digix 6 plus imaging sensor, and it also has improved iso sensitivity, uh ranging from 50 iso all the way to a hundred and two thousand iso, which is definitely a nice addition based on some of my low-light testing.
This is still one of the best full-frame video cameras out there for low light, photography and videography uh. Certainly is it as good as the a7s mark ii, i would say it’s uh very close, but not quite as good as that. Uh crazy uh, ultra low-light camera that sony has brought out. We did actually comparison between the two so definitely check out that video.
But one thing, that’s also new with the sensor – is that it’s also a dual pixel, which can be utilized for both stills and video mode. Now for video mode, specifically, this is probably one of the best af systems out there. You have a 61 points, uh in total and uh 41 of them are cross type and it’s a full phase detection system, so it pulls focus very accurately and reliably. There’S a couple of different modes for face detection, a fixed point, and if your lens servo is relatively quiet for the af system, you can definitely utilize uh. This hybrid af system uh for a video without really hearing the lens focus, which is definitely a big thing for video and sound recording and speaking of sound. You still have the option to hook up an external microphone via the 8 millimeter connection, as well as monitor your audio using a regular pair of headphones, and you have full manual control over your audio levels.
So, even though the sound quality of the built-in microphone is not that good, you still have a great option to make your audio very usable and very versatile in all sorts of different circumstances. Now, since we’re talking about connectivity might as well mention that we do also have usb 3.0 interface uh built into here for fast data, transferring as well as a built-in wi-fi for remote monitoring via your smartphone, which is definitely a handy thing as well as nfc and Built in a gps as well, so the camera is pretty much fully loaded with the latest and greatest wireless connectivity and should be a good future proofing option as well. Furthermore, when it comes to battery performance, the 5d mark iv is actually relatively good. I would say that it’s pretty much on par with the mark iii, so about 900 shots for jpegs, and if you shoot 1080p video you can get well over uh three and a half to four hours of active use. If you shoot a lot of 4k. It’S definitely going to drain the battery a lot faster, uh, probably around 30 to 40 percent uh generally, you can probably get around two hours uh using the 4k video feature.
So it’s not bad, but you probably want to get extra battery pack. If you want better. Overall battery performance for long shoots now, let’s finally talk about the video capabilities of the mark iv, which is probably one of its biggest upgrades. So essentially, you have the video capabilities of the canon 1dc, which came out a couple of years ago, but at a much more lower price tag and obviously the sensor is completely different and you have those excellent af capabilities, as we mentioned before. So, in terms of the actual 4k video recording it records cinema 4k standard, which is 4096 by 2160 at a maximum frame rate of about 30 fps and records that at a motion, jpeg codec, so you’re. Looking at 422 color sampling at 8-bit color depth, which is actually really good, you can actually get some decent frame grabs out of the 4k video, and that’s probably one of the reasons why they went with motion jpeg, even though it’s not the most friendliest codec to Use, but it’s certainly very very convertible. Now, the only drawback to the 4k video is going to be the fact that you can’t record the full one-to-one uh full-frame sensor. It actually crops down to about 1.74 times the actual full frame sensor, so it becomes more or less an aps-c sensor. Once you actually record a 4k now, you can still record a full frame at 1080p at around 180 megabits per second at 60, fps or 59.94 to be exact and you’ll have a little bit option for some slow motion mode at 720p at 120 frames per second And that has a bit rate about 160 megabits per second, so again, a great slow motion capabilities, not you know something.
That’S gon na wow people, but 120 frames per second, is definitely not bad at 720p for a dslr camera. Now. One thing i should mention is that the rolling shutter effect is a greatly exaggerated in 4k mode uh.
This is kind of obvious since you have so much data being read through the sensor and it’s not a global shutter. So you are going to see that there’s going to be a lot more jello vision if you’re shooting a lot of action in 4k mode compared to the 1080p mode, which has normal amounts of jello vision or a rolling shutter, so be mindful of that. If you’re shooting a lot of action now, of course you can, as we mentioned before, i use the hdmi clean output to record at 1080p uncompressed 422 color sampling. Unfortunately, it does not output at 4k at this stage of the game, but that would be nice to see uh later on, because this is definitely one heck of a sensor.
And if you take a look at the 4k quality itself, you’ll be very surprised. How much detail and color depth and information there is in this camera in a lot of ways, it’s probably more superior to the canon c300, which is a pretty darn amazing, a cinemagrade camera uh and with the low-light capabilities, and everything like that. This could definitely be a very versatile compact movie making machine now with all that said, let’s actually take a look at some more footage of the v5d mark iv, and that way you can determine how the camera looks at your eyes and we’ll throw in some low Light photography in there as well and then we’ll meet back, do do, but really on that guys, that’s really it as a standalone video camera. The mark iv certainly offers a lot of different capabilities.
That 4k video quality is absolutely sensational, very high bandwidth and overall detail that you get from the resolution and overall color rendition is quite fantastic. The only uh real disadvantage is the fact that you can’t utilize the full uh aspect: ratio of the sensor itself, your crop down to aps-c size when shooting a 4k, but as a 1080p camera, it’s absolutely fantastic and really the only ergonomical concern i would have. Is it would be nice to have a flip out screen love the touchscreen display and canon probably has the best ui interface in the market? Right now, if you’re coming from the older generation at canon 5ds, i would generally say that it’s definitely worth upgrading to the mark iv. It’S a brand new interface brand new camera has a completely new sensor. That’S going to give you tons of advantages when it comes to the auto focusing capabilities, certainly with that dual pixel sensor, it’s great for videos and photos, no matter what you’re doing, if you want to know more about the 5d mark iv check out the description down Below it’s a b h, link they’re, actually the ones providing this review unit.
