Nintendo NES Classic vs Raspberry Pi3 + RetroPie

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Nintendo NES Classic vs Raspberry Pi3 + RetroPie”.
What’S up everyone how’s it going! This is waj hope you guys are all doing well. So, for the past couple of weeks, i’ve been playing around with this the nes classic edition. This is essentially a miniaturized version of the original nintendo entertainment system that got released back in 1985.. Now the big thing about this little console, unfortunately they’re pretty much sold out in most uh retail outlets that you would traditionally find you’re gon na have to go to ebay or find it at a uh marked up a price on.

Most of these are sometimes going for double even triple the uh retail price, which is originally 59.99 now. Essentially, what this is is an emulator, that’s pre-loaded, with uh 30 well-known nes titles that most people will recognize, such as the super mario brothers series, the zelda series, donkey kong, pac-man, kirby’s adventure, etc. So, essentially, what this is more or less a novelty item that plays on people’s nostalgia and it’s definitely an excellent item if you’re, a nintendo collector or if you’re, just a fan of a classic retro gaming and uh love the overall design.

It’S very simple to use. Basically has an hdmi connections at the back and a simple power connection and an output for two of the original nes uh controllers, which comes uh included with the original package. Now, while i think the nes classic is a charming a gift and certainly a collectible item, uh one thing: that’s gon na be more practical, especially if you want a very capable retro, uh gaming console is actually building your own using a raspberry, pi, 3 and pre-loading. It with a piece of software called a retropie which then gives you the ability to emulate literally a limitless supply of retro gaming consoles and platforms from the original nes to the super nintendo all the way up to the nintendo gamecube, as well as the playstation one.

Essentially, the potential for emulating a different retro games is pretty much limitless, because the raspberry pi 3 is a fully fledged computer. It has an arm based quad core cpu, clocked around 1.2 gigahertz one gigabyte of ram. The big upgrade on the pi 3 model b. Is that we now have 802.11 and wireless connectivity, apart from just the lan connection, at the back, as well as four usb 3.0 connections, a full-size hdmi port for 1080p output and a whole bunch of other things, including bluetooth, wireless connectivity. Now another awesome thing about using a raspberry pi is that you can essentially connect any usb gamepad to it, whether that be a copy of the nes controller.

We actually have both a super nes controller and an original nes controller hooked up to it. So you can get that full effect, but of course the sky’s the limit over here when it comes to controllers now you can certainly uh purchase the raspberry pi 3 as a standalone unit and then kind of build your console yourself by getting the case and the Sd card on the controller separately, but i’m going to also have a link down below in the description where there’s a nice package where it comes with the pie itself, the controllers, all the different accessories, as well as an sd card. That’S pre-loaded with retropie, and essentially you just copy over your roms from a usb thumb, drive and then i’ll copy everything onto the emulation station, which pretty much runs. All your roms uh, through the different emulators and in the description down below you’ll, actually find a link for a full-on tutorial on how to actually install retropie onto a blank sd card if you’re, just starting out from scratch. But obviously, besides the gaming advantages that retropie presents, there’s also a piece of software called kodi, that’s installed, which is a great all-in-one media player and because we have a wireless connectivity, you can stream photos videos, whatever from your network, attached storage device uh to the pi Itself and have all that media functionality besides adjust the gaming capabilities now in pretty much every regard.

The raspberry pi 3 is a far superior uh purchase and a gift uh compared to the nes classic, but the nes classic isn’t really a rational decision. Again, it’s a novelty item, a built for collectors and nintendo enthusiasts, and it certainly has a place, but if you guys are interested in emulating uh any kind of retro gaming experience, this is probably the best way to go with the raspberry pi, 3 and all the Stuff we talked about, but other than that guys, that’s really it uh. Let me know what you guys think. Are you guys going to build your own little uh retropie, a raspberry pi 3 setup again check out the description down below for detailed links about everything.

We’Ve talked about: that’s really it thanks again for watching hope. You guys have a great holiday season and we’ll see you in the next article .
