Intel Optane Memory - Better than a SSD?

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Intel Optane Memory – Better than a SSD?”.
Hey, what’s up folks how’s it going. This is waj hope you guys are all doing well and in this article we’re going to be talking about intel, optane memory now intel has sent me a pre-assembled pc to kind of show you guys on how optane memory works and the benefit it provides for your Overall, pc performance, so without any further ado, let’s actually take a look at the pc. It’S featuring the core i7 8700 processor. Now we also have a z370 motherboard as well as a gtx 1070. So we can demonstrate the gaming capabilities of this machine with the optane memory module, which is right over here.

Intel Optane Memory - Better than a SSD?

This is the 32 gigabyte version, which is more optimal for uh. Somebody, like myself, is going to be doing a little bit of content creation, some gaming and just a little bit more of a higher intensive user there’s also a 16 gigabyte, a model designed for more general purpose, but will still give you the same performance level found On the 32 gigabyte version now you can see this module is an m.2 form factor and it’s using pci express nvme connection in order to get the highest bandwidth and throughput possible uh, based on the current generation of motherboards. Now the technology is actually based out of 3dx point memory, media as well as intel’s own rapid storage technology drivers and essentially, what it does is operates in between the processor and slower speed. Sata devices such as a mechanical hard drive and what it does is accelerate. The communication process between the two by storing commonly used data and programs closer to the processor, so the system can access it more rapidly and more efficiently. Therefore, increasing the responsiveness and overall speed of your entire system, and with this specific, a memory acceleration method intel actually claims that every day-to-day task should be a lot faster. For example, uh web browsing can be up to five times faster. Launching games can be up to 67 percent faster and just your overall application.

Intel Optane Memory - Better than a SSD?

Launching capabilities and switching capabilities can be up to 28 faster than using a standard mechanical hard drive on its own. Now, one of the big benefits that i see with intel optane is: it actually creates a virtual disk that merges its uh optane memory with the actual mechanical hard drive. So the operating system sees this as one large drive, and one of the huge benefits of this is the fact that you can use the advantages of a large capacity is that mechanical hard drives inherently have with the speed of an ssd, because traditionally, what i used To do and a lot of people do is i use a smaller kind of ssd for all their software and where they would install the operating system onto and then for long-term storage use, a mechanical, hard drive or use multiple uh mechanical hard drives in order to Store the games and all their other kind of heavy-duty multimedia files. Now what we have over here is.

Intel Optane Memory - Better than a SSD?

We have one single drive without that complication and uh. I remember in the past where my ssd would run out of space. I would have to migrate all the important applications or whatever i was installing onto the ssd into another mechanical hard drive. But with here you can use five terabyte hard drives and still have the benefit of an ssd.

So that’s a really really innovative and i think pretty convenient now move forward. Let’S actually take a look at some of the performance advantages that intel optane memory has compared to just running a single mechanical hard drive, so we could see a more direct comparison. The big thing over here is a boot up times. Now i’m going to start my pc over here and, as you can see it boots up in no time it actually takes only seven seconds for me to go to the sign up page and probably within eight or nine seconds, i’m on to the desktop.

So that’s insanely fast now compared to just using the hard drive itself. It actually took about 22 seconds to get to the sign up page in about 25 seconds to get to the desktop so huge, huge difference in terms of boot up times. Uh. That’S definitely for sure now.

Another test that we’re going to do is searching up specific files on our pc and i’m going to find a logo idea that i’ve been working on for the channel. So i’m going to type in logo and there it is right there. As you can see, it took no time to find it. Another thing that we’re going to do is find a spreadsheet for my strength, training program, so it’s called small of junior and there’s my excel spreadsheet right there and again, you can see that it pretty much takes no time whatsoever, it’s just as fast as any high-end Performing ssd, furthermore, if you’re going to do some heavy duty, multitasking optane is certainly more than capable of to handle those situations. So right now i have a 4k premier project running in the background and i’m going to switch in between a couple of different applications. From my drive web browser to my itunes account and even pull up at the calculator and as you can see, everything is fairly responsive in terms of switching between those applications, so this can certainly be used in any kind of high-end workstation grade pc. Now another cool factor about optane is since it actively stores commonly used data and applications uh, and it knows kind of what you do on a day-to-day basis. It can actually speed up the process of launching big applications that you use on a frequent basis.

So for me, i use premiere pro pretty much on the daily and i’m going to pull up a 4k file and on the optane setup it only takes about 26 seconds to load all of my multimedia files and to show me the high quality preview versus on The hard drive it takes over 48 seconds in the same scenario, so uh. Definitely a huge performance bump there now. Lastly, that we’re going to do is just do a quick, uh game launch test, so i’m gon na pull up steam and launch project cars and the load time on optane is certainly going to be a lot more optimized than just using a traditional mechanical hard drive. It’S going to give you again this similar performance as what you would find with an ssd, and it takes about five seconds faster to get into the game compared to my mechanical hard drive, so definitely a a big advantage there and the advantage is even more amplified When it comes to overall load times within the game itself and games certainly take a lot of memory and storage capacity, and this is a great solution because again you can put up a five terabyte hard drive integrated with an octane 32 gigabyte, uh module and have The same uh benefits of a dual drive system with an ssd and a large hard drive without any of the hassles.

So definitely an awesome system uh, something that a lot of gamers should probably integrate into their existing platforms. But besides that guys uh, that’s really it! I definitely love to give a huge shout out and thank you to intel for giving the opportunity to talk about optane to demonstrate the capabilities without them. This video certainly wouldn’t be possible and if you’re interested in finding out more information about optane memory, definitely a go to intel.com optane memory and if you’re interested in pricing of the 32 and 16 gigabyte model go to shop.intel.com.
