So, just moments ago we got unveiled three new iphone models, just as the rumors predicted. We now have a 10r a 10s and a 10s max specifically. Here i want to compare the biggest baddest greatest smartphone that’s available right now from the android platform, namely the samsung galaxy note 9, in my opinion, and compare it to the largest offering from the iphone side, the 10s max, which is going to be available for pre-order.
This friday, the 14th and available later on this month september the 21st. Now what i want to do specifically is compare the design of the note versus the 10s max and when taking a look at the construction itself, you’re going to notice that the samsung is made out of aluminum construction and it has gorilla glass 5 front to back. Now the iphone is going to be made out of high quality, stainless steel frame, and it’s also going to have glass front to back.
Just like we saw on the original iphone 10.. Now both have ip68 certification and the iphone specifically can go underwater up to two meters deep for about 60 minutes versus the note is rated for about one and a half meters down for about 30 minutes now, physically the note’s going to be a little bit wider Than the iphone, but the iphone will be taller and thinner, namely about 7.7 millimeters in terms of thickness on the iphone or about 8.8 millimeters. On the note side, the note will generally be a little bit lighter it’s going to be hard to perceive, but it’s rated around 201 grams versus the max is going to be 208 grams. Now, a big feature that i’m kind of excited about is the fact that we finally have a dual sim option for the iphones. Unfortunately, it’s for the chinese market and the regular phones will have esim support, but it’s going to be cool to have the option to have two separate carriers, two separate sims on an iphone.
It’S actually something that i do quite often uh, traveling back and forth between canada and the us. Unfortunately, i’ll probably have to get the chinese version, but it’s nice to know that that option is available. Obviously, we’ve been enjoying this option on android phones for many years, including the note now moving on. Let’S talk about the displays on these devices and for the first time ever, the iphone actually has the larger display. Both are using organic, led technology, but the iphone is 6.5 inches versus 6.4 inches on the note size. But the note still has the iphone beat slightly in terms of resolution, rated at uh 2960 by 1440, giving a ppi count about 560.
The iphone is still relatively high, it’s 2688 pixels by 1242 pixels wide, and it has a ppi rating about 458 in terms of screen to body ratio. Generally speaking, we have about 84 percent on the iphone and about 83 and a half percent on the note now in terms of the internal specifications, it’s hard to compare because they’re running on completely different architectures. But in terms of the apple side, we have the new a12 bionic chip, it’s comprised of a six core cpu, a quad core gpu and the neural engine in terms of the cpu itself. It’S comprised of two performance cores and four high efficiency cores and if we compare it to last year’s a11 chip, the performance cores are about 15 percent faster and 40 percent more efficient and the four high efficiency cores take about 50 percent, less power than apple’s a11 And the gpu is also 50 faster than last year’s processor, as well.
Now, there’s actually two different versions of the note 9 one has the exynos 9810 octa-core chip, which is designed for europe, the middle east and africa. The other one that i have over here has the snapdragon 845 chip, which is designed for north america, south america, as well as china. So let’s actually focus on the snapdragon version. It is a uh octa-core chip.
We have one quad-core cairo chip, rated at a 2.8 gigahertz and another one, that’s rated at 1.7 gigahertz. We have uh the adreno 630 gpu and regarding the ram we can either have an 8 gigabyte version with a 512 internal storage capacity or a 6 gigabyte ram version, with 128 gigabyte capacity and, of course, like many other previous versions. The note 9 still has the micro sd expansion slot, as well as a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack, which is always a nice convenience. Now, in terms of the memory on the iphone, we have four gigabytes of ram on all those models and i think, in terms of real world performance, i have a feeling that this new a12 bionic chip is going to be super killer in terms of performance.
Optimization, obviously, apple designing their chip from scratch to go with their operating system is going to be super optimized and probably generally faster than the pretty decent performance we’re getting on the snapdragon 845 on the note 9, but of course, we’ll confirm that, with later benchmarking, now In terms of the dual facing rear cameras, you’re going to notice that both smartphones on paper look very similar in terms of specs 12 megapixels, both uh pixel sizes are the same. At one point, four micrometers, both wide angle cameras have phase detection, auto focusing as well as optical stabilization, but there is going to be a difference in terms of field of view and lens configuration on the samsung. We have a wider aperture at f 1.5, as well as a wider lens configuration rated at 26 millimeters, giving you a wider field of view than the 28 millimeter lens on the apple side, as well as a slightly smaller opening for the lens at rated.
At f. 1.8, the zoom lens or the telephoto lens is pretty much identical on both platforms. We i’m not sure if we have phase detection auto, focusing on the telephoto lens on the samsung side, but we do have that on the iphone. But we have the same pixel size about one micrometer very similar overall lens configuration at 52 millimeters and the same aperture size as well. Now, importantly, in terms of the portrait photography mode using the telephoto lenses apple has made some improvements in terms of enhancing the bokeh effect, the out of focus elements.
In the background you can also change the aperture post uh, actually taking your photo, which is really cool. You can kind of unblur and focus the background. Uh post, shooting uh your photo on the samsung side, but it’s more of a software effect than anything else and doesn’t look as convincing as the system we see with the iphone. Of course, we’ll have to test out both cameras to see which one actually looks better, but in terms of low light performance and everything like that, i think they’re going to be very, very similar and super competitive.
It’S going to be hard to really tell the difference between the two. Besides the image, processing capabilities. Now, on the front facing aside uh, starting with the note, we have an f 1.7 25 millimeter lens, it’s 8 megapixels and it’s slightly wider than what we find on the iphone, which is a 7 megapixel. F: 2.2 32 millimeter lens now the front facing a camera array on the new iphone has been improved for facial recognition.
It’S using uh ir sensors, which are twice as fast as the previous generation, as well as new dot projection. Sensors should be greatly improved in terms of the security features we still have face id as the main primary, unlocking a system for the new iphone. But on the note side we have iris detection face detection as well as a fingerprint scanner, slash heart rate and o2 sensor at the back of the phone.
So we definitely have more options to unlock our device. On the note side, which is cool, but a lot of people are really happy with the face id system we have on the original iphone 10 and the 10s max and 10s are just going to improve upon what was great to begin with now. Lastly, let’s talk about the battery parameters on both platforms, the note has a 4 000 milliampere capacity versus 3, 300 milliamperes or somewhere in that vicinity on the iphone, and that might not seem like much but keep in mind that the a12 bionic is super efficient. In a lot of ways and the hardware and software is completely optimized with the iphone side and we usually find decent battery performance, but that being said, i think most likely the note’s going to come out slightly ahead in terms of endurance tests. Of course, we’ll have to test that out now in terms of the wireless charging tech, we have power map pma, as well as qi charging support for the note and exclusively with the iphones. You can only use qi chargers, and that brings us to our sponsor.
