iPhone Xs – Smaller Battery, But Longer Life!?!

iPhone Xs - Smaller Battery, But Longer Life!?!

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “iPhone Xs – Smaller Battery, But Longer Life!?!”.
Hey, what’s up folks how’s it going this is watch now we’ve been doing a lot of testing with the iphone 10s, particularly with the battery performance. One of the things that’s interesting to note is that, coming from the original iphone 10, it actually changed the battery design and parameters. Quite a bit. We’Re now looking at a single pack compared to the iphone 10 dual pack design, it’s an l shape and we’ve also reduced the overall capacity by two percent.

The original iphone 10 was rated at 27 16 milliamp hours versus the 10s is rated at 26.59 milliamp hours. Now that doesn’t seem like much but uh in this high efficiency world, where smartphones are super, thin, very efficient, every single milliamp hour matters. Now what we want to do with our drain test is: do a direct comparison between the original iphone 10, as well as the next best competitor, the samsung galaxy s9, the standard model now in terms of capacity. Obviously the samsung has the iphone’s beat with the 3 000 a milliamp hours and uh. It also supports uh qi and pma wireless charging uh the really cool thing about the charging speeds on the iphone 10.

It was actually really really fast to begin with. You took a look at the our charging time. Uh comparison, you can see that the iphones to get to 50 consistently can get it in 30 minutes or less versus the s9 takes around 37 minutes. On our experience and also to get to a full charge, the samsung does speed up quite a bit.

It takes about 128 minutes to get to a full charge versus 139 on the 10s and about 143 on the original iphone. Now another advantage on the iphone side is that they’re super fast in terms of wireless charging speed to get to a zero to 100 charge using our rav power fast wireless charger. It only took the 10s about 165 minutes and the original iphone 10 166 minutes versus the s9 took about 228 minutes to get to 100 charge.

So that’s definitely a nice little plus in terms of the wireless charging perspective. Now, in terms of the actual battery drain test, we like to do two different tests. One is a video playback test and the other is the geekbench battery benchmarking tool. So, in terms of video playback, what we do is we download the vlc app play a 4k video on loop to infinity and see how long each device lasts – and here are the results over here. So the winner is surprisingly by a small margin: the iphone 10s.

Yes, even with the smaller capacity, it went all the way to 14 hours, 13 minutes before running out of juice versus the original iphone went about 14 hours, eight minutes and the s9, with its higher resolution, display, went uh 13 hours 48 minutes now. In terms of the geekbench benchmark, it doesn’t utilize the screen resolution to that same extent as our video playback test, so we actually found that the s9, with its higher capacity, beat out the iphones. In this scenario, it ran the benchmark the longest about six hours. 39 minutes 5 hours.

21 minutes was the time for the 10s, and the original iphone 10 was around 4 hours 43 minutes. You can also see the scores laid out right in front of you as well. Now, what’s really interesting is that, even though the iphone 10s has the smallest battery capacity physically with those new high efficiency cores on the a12 bionic, it’s beating out the larger battery that was in the original iphone 10 and even in some scenarios in terms of video Playback tests, it’s beating out the larger capacity 3000 milliamp hour battery, that’s in the s9, so the 10s is a awesome demonstration of what software and fully optimized hardware can do in terms of giving you the most bang for your buck in terms of power efficiency, and I’M sure, with the later ios updates, the efficiency is going to get better and better so uh. Definitely let me know what you guys think, if you’re interested in seeing how the iphone 10s max compares against the samsung counterparts check out our battery performance.
