Almost Perfect? 2019 MacBook Pro16-inch Review

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Almost Perfect? 2019 MacBook Pro16-inch Review”.
What’S up folks how’s it going, this watch hope you guys are all doing well and today we’re going to be taking a look at the new 16-inch macbook pro now in order to address and hopefully resolve some of the problems with the previous generation. Macbook pro apple has come out with this new generation, mainly to fix the biggest underlighting problem, which was the ultra low profile, butterfly mechanism keyboard. Now we have a more traditional scissor style switch in here with rubber domes and the key travel has gone up from point. Eight millimeter travel distance to about one millimeter travel distance, which doesn’t sound like a whole lot, but it definitely feels more like familiar territory. It definitely reminds me of the previous generation keyboard, although it doesn’t have the same amount of travel.

Now i’ve been playing around with the keyboard for a couple of days now and i think it’s a good middle ground in order to address the issue of making an ultra thin laptop, and this is still only 16.2 millimeters in terms of thickness. And it is still a fairly large laptop while still giving you a good tactile sensation, and we also have a new structure and face of the keycaps they’re a little bit more concave and the overall haptics of the keystrokes feel pretty soft initially. But as you go down towards at the bottom of the keystroke, you do have a nice little clicky, satisfying sensation that you’ve initiated a keystroke and it definitely feels a lot more tactile than the pretty much touch screen like sensation that you got on the previous generation. Low profile keyboard now, some of the more subtle changes are definitely nice on the new keyboard as well, including a physical escape key on the top left hand corner, as well as a individually separated touch id power button on the top right hand, corner, which also has A matte black finish matching the overall aesthetic of the keyboard and, as a result of this, the touch bar has been shortened by about 19 millimeters, which is perfectly fine. The shape of the arrow keys has been also changed to a more inverted t, traditional shape, which is also a welcome addition. Now, at the end of the day, if you’re, a fan of large mechanical style, desktop, keyboards you’re – probably still not going to like this thing, but in terms of a general compromise. It’S definitely a better direction to go to if you’re, making an ultra powerful and ultra thin laptop. Now you can see the force touch trackpad on the 16 inch macbook pro is absolutely massive measures: around 100 millimeters by 160 millimeters tons of travel, distance, tons of real estate to initiate any kind of multi-touch commands and gestures.

You also have the force, click functionality and it’s really the best trackpad that i’ve used on any laptop thus far. Now some of the other concerns that people had with the previous channel was the fact that you don’t have a lot of variety in terms of ports and connectivity options. We still have pretty much four usbc thunderbolt 3 connections, which is great in terms of versatility.

Since you can hook up two 6k displays or up to four 4k displays with these connections, you can transfer data up to 40 gigabits. A second and each of these usbc inputs do have the ability to charge the laptop itself or to externally charge other usb type-c devices, which is handy, but besides the 3.5 millimeter headphone jack. There are no other ports, so that means you’re going to need to invest in adapters like this to get access to regular, usb type-a connections, sd cards, as well as hdmi displayport connections, etc, which is definitely going to take away from the streamlined look.

That apple is trying to maintain with this machine now in terms of the display quality itself. It’S absolutely gorgeous, as you would imagine, it’s 16 inches diagonally speaking ips led backlit has a native resolution of 3072 by 1920 and a ppi count of about 226. It’S super bright rated up to 500 nits according to apple, has true tone technology and a maximum refresh rate about 60 hertz, which could be disappointing for a laptop of this price. Since there’s a lot of pc manufacturers giving you 120 and beyond in terms of refresh rate, although this is still not a gaming laptop by any stretch of the imagination, there are just a general benefits of having a higher refresh rate, even when using just simple desktop-based Applications, furthermore, like many other apple products, you do have a fairly reflective glass finish on the display, so in brightly lit conditions that may be annoying for some people, but it’s kind of the tradition that we find in most laptops these days now.

One aspect that really blew me away on this thing was the speaker: quality of six high fidelity individual speakers with force cancelling woofers built inside, and it produces a fairly wide stereo soundscape and the bass response is actually very low and very deep. It’S great for listening to music, watching movies and things like that, and i don’t think you’re going to need an external speaker source, even if you’re going to use this as a desktop replacement, pc, which is definitely awesome. You do have also adobe atmos certification on the speakers themselves now in terms of the front-facing facetime camera, we’re actually shooting with it right now. It’S 720p 30 frames per second, so that really hasn’t changed from the previous generation, but the microphones have been slightly upgraded. We have a triple mic configuration and it’s a beam, foaming directional pattern, so it should do a better job in terms of picking up your voice, especially important for video conferencing, and things like that. Now, the internal configuration on this thing is actually fairly simple. You have an option between two different cpus, two different gpus and different memory configurations for the cpus. You primarily have a choice between the ninth generation, six core core i7 processor or the eight core i9 version of that cpu.

You also have different boost frequencies as an optional upgrade for each of those platforms and for the gpus we’re using amd radeon pros either the 5300 m on the base configuration or the upgrade 5500m. Now. The version that we have specifically is basically the poor man’s version. It’S the cheapest configuration possible which comes with an intel, i7.

9750H processor. That’S a 6 core chip with 12 threads base. Frequency is 2.6 gigahertz and it can turbo up to 4.5 gigahertz 12 megabytes of level 3 cache. We also have a discrete amd radeon, pro 5300 mgp with 4 gigabytes of gdr6 memory, as well as 16 gigabytes of a 26 66 megahertz ddr4 desktop memory, as well as a 512 gigabyte, ssd drive and now apple being the control freaks. They are pretty much. None of the capabilities of the macbook pro is user upgradeable. The system memory, as well as the ram ssd drive, is all integrated into the pcb of the unit itself, and none of it can be changed past the time of purchase. Now, for our bottom of the barrel, macbook pro 16 inch, the price comes to just under 2 400, which is definitely a big chunk of change in a lot of ways.

But if you think of it, we are still getting an ultra powerful, fairly portable machine. That’S going to deliver exceptional battery life and is versatile enough to pretty much do any kind of content creation test. In fact, i’ve been using it all week to do a lot of video photo editing with my adobe suite and obviously just general desktop related tasks and it’s certainly a suitable desktop replacement device as well.

So if you’re gon na have one pc for everything, this is certainly not a bad candidate and keep in mind, even though you can definitely get a lot more for a windows based pc uh. There is the fact that apple macbooks specifically hold their price very well. In the long term, so if you want to use this thing for about a year or two, you can still get a decent chunk of change back when you decide to sell it in the used market now i did also get a chance to do some benchmarking With this thing, in terms of the cpu specific benchmarks, we use a cinebench and we got to score about 2836 on geekbench on the single core performance.

We got just under 1200 points 11.96 and the multi-core performance was about 57.27. Now in terms of the pcie base. Ssd drive it’s going to deliver some relatively fast performance based on black magic scores, were getting about 2.5 gigabytes, a second terms of right and about 2.7 gigabytes a second in terms of a read and in terms of the gpu specific scores. I use a unigine’s valley benchmark at 1080p high detail settings we’ve got an average, a frame rate of 72.9 frames per second, which is a definitely pretty good and in terms of exporting 4k video files, both in final cut and premiere pro, basically, the same 10 minute Project took only about 4 minutes 35 seconds on final cut and about 5 minutes 12 seconds on the latest version of premiere pro.

So definitely a fast and powerful capable little machine that we have over here now in terms of the battery parameters, we basically have a 100 watt hour, lithium polymer battery inside which will give you around 11 hours according to apple. In terms of general usage, i did a video playback test and i specifically got a total run time about 7 hours and 24 minutes and that wasn’t an airplane mode with 50 brightness on which is not as good as i would like. But perhaps with a couple of more recharge and discharge cycles that performance may improve, but generally not too bad battery life. We also have a 96 watt usbc charger, which will get thing pretty much charged in under an hour which is pretty quick as well. Now, beyond those nations the summer is everything we’ve talked about thus far. I don’t think that there’s a lot of problems with the 16-inch macbook pro. It certainly solved the issue of having a crappy keyboard with this new magic keyboard, which is nice to see solid, display, solid internal performance if you’re going to fault it on anything, it’s probably due to the fact that you don’t have a lot of connectivity options. Don’T have an sd card reader, don’t have a full size, hdmi connection or a standard, usb connection and quite expensive uh, just as a general starting price and the fact that it has no user or upgradable options is definitely a bummer as well.

But besides that, it’s a fantastic machine and if you have the money for it and are looking for a premium grade laptop, i don’t think there’s a better thing out there right now, but definitely love to hear your thoughts. We’Re going to have an ultimate setup guide for the 16-inch macbook pro coming up very very soon, so uh check out the description or click on the card once that video becomes available.
