Hello and welcome to tech deals. Does your cpu choice really matter when you’re playing games at 1440p on a 250 graphics card, or are you mostly going to be gpu bottlenecked today is a follow-up video to my recent? You don’t need an rtx 3080 to play games at 1440p, 144hz video this time, switching from the i9 10 900k used in that video to the ryzen 7 2700x. After the video, multiple viewers left comments regarding the use of the i9 10 900k cpu on my benchmark of the gtx 1660 ti, rightly pointing out that no one with any sense would be using this cpu and gpu combination. I agree with that view.
However, there are reasons for doing such testing first using the fastest gaming cpu in the world removes as much of the cpu and system as possible from being a bottleneck allowing the full power of the gpu to shine. It shows the best case scenario of what is possible. Second, it allows me to do a follow-up video, comparing the full line of graphics cards from the 150 entry level, gtx 1650, all the way up to the new 1500 holler rtx 3090 on a single cpu and test bench. I did such a video last year on my 16 gpus compared and i’ll do a refreshed version of that series.
This december, in 2020, once rdna, 2 and ampere fully launch the ryzen 7 2700x was picked because it represents the first and second generation of ryzen cpus and has been sold for some very steep discounts in the past as low as 135 dollars brand new black friday. 2019, which was such a good offer, we did a dedicated, live stream on just that deal. It is also new enough that i wouldn’t advise most people to just replace it in the next year or two unless ultra premium computing is the goal. If the rtx 3090 is on your radar, then yeah zen 3 is probably in your future as well. However, if 500 or under graphics cards are your thing keep the 2700x for a while. It is a solid choice. This test bench uses the asus rog strix x470-f motherboard with the latest bios windows and driver updates. Our first game tested is fortnite in the same battle mode, using the same version of the game on both machines. 1440P high detail is being tested here, which typically would put all of the load on the gpu, especially on a mid-level card like this one, keep in mind that fortnite sets render resolution to 75 when high detail 1440p is picked. So this is right in the middle of 1080p and 1440p at 2.7 million pixels of rendering that’s about what you’d get on a 1080p ultra wide 21.9 monitor, because this is live gameplay. It is naturally going to vary from battle to battle.
However, across 15 minutes of intense combat dropping into the same place over and over and even picking the same starting point on the floating island, it’s pretty close. All things considered. These results are far enough apart to not just be random variation, but rather reflects the raw performance difference between these cpus in terms of average frame rate 142 on the i9 versus 125 on the ryzen 7. Isn’T too bad.
Both are highly playable frame rates and only professional gamers are likely to care about the difference there. If you do care well, spend more money and get more performance, because more graphics card is only going to help so much on the ryzen 7 2700x. It is more cpu limited here than the usage number would imply if you doubt that. Allow me to draw your attention to the one percent low and the frame time graphs. The i9 10 900 k is so much smoother across the board and it was consistent that way across both entire battles. Next, we have ghost recon breakpoint an intense aaa game from ubisoft that is not known for being the most optimized game in the world. The biggest difference i want you to notice here are the frame time graphs to be absolutely clear.
The ryzen 7 2700x is completely playable. It was not a bad experience at all. The i9, however, was superior in terms of how smooth the game really was. There is a small average performance difference, but this can be written off to where i was in both situations. The one percent low numbers are effectively the same. The real performance difference here shows up in the lack of any input lag or stutter in the i9, which really is butter smooth in fairness, a ryzen 9 3900x would be similar in terms of smoothness. So if you prefer amd – and you have a ryzen 7 2700x consider moving to a zen 3 based ryzen 9 when they launch for a better experience, if not more fps grand theft, auto 5 is a classic game still played by millions. This is the story mode of the game, mostly because it’s way easier to test repeatedly from the same saved game file in the same spot over and over, keep in mind that grand theft auto online is not going to run quite this fast. But at least this gives you an idea of the performance difference between these two cpus.
Now, both cpus ran this game very well. However, just like the others, the i9 is faster and smoother, not by so much as to make it bad on the ryzen 7. Far from it, it’s just better on the i-9 overwatch remains one of the top esports games played online today, thankfully, it is super easy to run on modest hardware. Both of these cpus are way overkill for this game, as reflected by the performance numbers you see on the screen.
The specific battle being played will, of course, affect those numbers way more than these two cpus will honestly an i3 10 100 or a ryzen. 3 3100. Is absolutely plenty for this game, so anything beyond that is just gravy. The division 2 remains one of my favorite games in recent years. Where else can you walk into a room like rambo, open up on a dozen bad guys with a belt-fed weapon and pretend that you’re in the expendables performance on both cpus is solid? However, the i9 is faster here, with higher average frame rates and 30 percent higher one percent lows look at the frame time graphs. The i9 is much smoother with almost flat line frame time graph throughout most of the game, while the ryzen 7 has a lot of small stutters in it now zen 2, the third generation, the 3700x fixed most of those stutters – and i do expect that zen 3 Will do even better when it launches so like before, if you want the smoothness of the i9, but you want to buy amd. Zen 3 will be ideal for that. However, zen 2 is not a bad choice either if you’re on a first or second gen, ryzen, cpu and money is tight.
It’S worth waiting until black friday to see if zen 2 goes on sale. The way zen plus did last year. If you can pick up a ryzen 7 3700x for under 200., it may be a better value than the upcoming ryzen 7 5700x cpu, at whatever price it launches at probably 329.. If amd keeps to their pattern – and yes, i did say 5700x rumors – are they will skip the 4000 series names for the primary desktop cpus? Now, that’s not confirmed we’ll see what happens in october.
Here is a graph with all five games shown the average frame rate and the one percent lows. What is not shown here are the frame time graphs. That’S why live gameplay footage is included, so you can watch that in real time with the action a chart only tells part of the story. The footage is another part and playing the games themselves is yet another, since you can’t reach through your monitor and play the games yourself on these two machines.
Let me offer this thought: both are awesome, cpus and either would keep most gamers happy. Is the i-9 better? Of course it is sometimes by little, sometimes by a lot. It depends upon what you’re doing if money isn’t an issue, it is the cpu to own for gaming. However, it is also 500, while the ryzen 7 2700x has been sold brand new for as low as 135 dollars. As much as i like the i9, i have to give the value props to the ryzen 7 2700x. The average frame rates across all five games are shown here. The i9 was 10 frames per second faster than the ryzen 7 overall, that may not sound like much and honestly, it’s really not the one percent low is where you see the real difference with the i9 being 50 percent faster than the ryzen 7.. If you watched all the footage, you saw that in the frame time graphs it isn’t game breaking.
All of these games are playable with fortnite being the roughest of the bunch, but it does show that cpu choice does matter even when you’re using a 250 graphics card. Even when you’re playing at 1440p, in my opinion, you tend to get what you pay for in this business. Ryzen 7 2700x ended up discounted to 135, not because amd was being charitable, but because compared to intel, it really was not the equal to the i9 9900k. That existed at that time. I don’t think we’ll see that same level of discount this year to the ryzen 7 3700x, because it’s much closer to intel in terms of performance 199 dollars strikes me as a fair price for the 3700 x once the 5700x is launched. However, time will tell on how that works out.
Finally, it’s worth keeping in mind that we’re testing at the middle resolution on a graphics card that wasn’t really meant for in games that typically want more than this card offers. Put an rtx 2070 super or an rx 5700 xt on both machines and the performance gap. Will only grow.
