Zen 4 — Deal or No Deal? — Full Details on Ryzen 7000 & AM5 — The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Zen 4 — Deal or No Deal? — Full Details on Ryzen 7000 & AM5 — The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly”.
Hello and welcome to tech deals. Amd has announced the details and launch date of zen 4, its much anticipated new cpu launching on an all new platform called am5. Today, i’m going to share with you the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to this new line of cpus amd claims. A massive up to 29 total single thread performance gain compared to the existing ryzen 5000 series. Cpus, that’s not bad! For just one generation, even if it has been two years since then three launched, of course, keep in mind.

These are marketing claims, so take that with a huge grain of salt, also note that amd used the up to line which is one of marketing’s favorite terms. However, i don’t judge amd too harshly there intel does the same thing. Having said that, from benchmark leaks and specific details, provided i expect about 25 percent to be a reasonable number to expect in terms of single core boost, so we’ll go with that number here, actual ipc or instruction per clock cycle improvements will vary, amd provided many examples Of ipc uplift, ranging from 39 percent in w prime on one end to 1 in cpu z, not to worry counter strike global offensive was in the list and it landed smack dab in the middle at 13. So if you have an rtx 3090 ti and you play at 1080p high detail, you’ll get 13 percent more frames per second on your shiny new zenforce cpu. Yes, to be fair, that’s a bit of snark! However, it’s worth remembering that such benchmarks are often run in situations that most people will never be in, so the results aren’t always comparable to real life. Ryzen 7000 is built using tsmc’s five nanometer process and requires a new socket called am5. This is an lga or lan grid array socket. So, if you’re familiar with how intel cpus install, then you know exactly what to expect. Am5 provides up to 230 watts to the cpu socket supports ddr5 ram pci express 5, and it is backwards compatible with am4 cooler. Mounts so no need for adapters, it is worth noting there is no ddr4 ram support at all, so you will have to buy new ram if you want to upgrade to am5. Pci. Express 5, however, is fully backwards compatible. So your existing gen, 3 and gen 4 graphics cards and ssds will work just fine on am5 two new motherboard chipsets are coming along with ryzen 7000, the x670 and the b650. However, amd has not yet provided many details on either.

Chipset expect b650 motherboards to cost around 200 for a reasonable board and x670 boards will cost 300 and up way up, but 300 is a good target for those that brings us to pricing. Oh boy. This is where it gets interesting. First, the pricing mostly looks like the zen 3 did at launch 299 dollars for the ryzen 5 7600x, exactly the same price as the 5600x was at launch. The ryzen 7 700 x is 399, which is 50 less than the 5800x was at launch. The ryzen 9 7 900 x is 549, the exact same price as the 5900x and the ryzen 9 79 50 x is 6.99, which is a solid 100 less than the 5950x was at launch.

So that’s nice to see pricing is where zen4 starts to fall. Apart for me, and why i’m not as excited about this launch, as some people seem to think i should be – let’s use the 7600x as an example. It is 25 faster than the 5600x performance competitive with intel’s 12th generation alder lake and includes a number of new technologies on a new platform for the future. What’S not to like the 300 price tag is the problem.

Yes, it’s the same as the 5600x was at launch, but the 5600x isn’t 300 anymore, it’s under 200. for 189 dollars. You get solid performance on an existing, stable platform using less expensive, motherboards and ddr4 ram, and it even comes with a cooler in the box which the 7600x does not include. 58 more money for 25, more performance on a more expensive platform that uses more expensive ram.

Doesn’T include a cooler doesn’t strike me as something to get very excited about. It sounds expensive, which is what it is sure it’s faster, but if you were a premium, buyer wanting high frame rates you’d have already bought the ryzen 7 5800x 3d for those epic esports gaming experiences. The other two nails in the coffin for the 7600x are the 5900x and the 12700 kf. The 5900x is a 365 drop in upgrade for existing am4 owners and the 12700 kf is 321 at the moment.

Now that is a whopping 21 dollars more than a 7600x will cost for the price of a pizza. You get a 12 core cpu that holds its own with the 78600x in single core thread performance and it absolutely demolishes it in multi-core thread performance. You can also have it today on a z690 motherboard that supports ddr4 ram for about with the 7600x will cost when it launches.

Please note: i am not calling the zen4 lineup bad or slow, i’m calling it a poor value for the money. Zen 3 is zenfort’s. Worst enemy at current prices – and this is before we even see intel’s hand in the form of the 13th gen raptor leg, which is due to be revealed at the end of september, expect about a 15 performance increase from that over alder lake.

However, to be fair, expect a price hike as well, so that’ll mostly cancel out those performance gains. What’S the moral of the story here, if you’re already on am 4, if you have a ryzen, 5, 2600x or perhaps 2700x on a 400 series, motherboard run, don’t walk and get a 365 ryzen, 9 5900x upgrade to awesome and skip am5 completely. Am6 is due out in 2026, as amd is only promising three years of am5 support this time around a 5900x should cover most people for the next four years without a problem, if you’re not on am4, the i7 12 700 kf for 321 dollars is a crazy Good deal for what it offers install it on a ddr4 board like this asrock z690 riptide for just 152., buy a fuma 2 cpu cooler, 32 gigabytes of ddr4 3600 ram for 90 and for 628 dollars. You are off to the races with all the performance. Most people will need for the next four plus years. By that time, amd will have am6 coming out, intel will probably released two more cpu, sockets pci express 6 will be out, and the entire pc landscape will have changed.

So you can decide fresh what to do at that point. As a side note, the one zen 4 cpu that i am actually interested in is the ryzen 9 7950x at 699 dollars. It is 150 more than the 5950x is today, were you to buy it new. However, at the premium end, spending 27 more money for 25 more performance is actually a really good deal.

Usually you have to pay a premium to get the best if you’re on that end of things, i really have no issues with that cpu. If you’re building an epic, 4 000 gaming pc to rule them all, go for it, i look forward to reading all of your thoughts in the comment section down below i’m sure some of you will agree with my conclusions. Some of you will not either way. Please keep it respectful and state your case without attacking other people and i’m happy to hear from all sides. One more thought before i go. A ryzen 7 3700x with an rx 6600, will play all current games at 1080p, high detail or better without any complaint whatsoever. Just because new shiny things come out does not mean that your current pc is trash, don’t be lured in by the new shiny and spend money you don’t have to when your current system works. Just fine.

Having said that, if you’re rocking a ryzen, 5 1600 and an rx470, allow me to be blunt, it is time to upgrade. You can always stretch a pc just a little bit more but before you know it that little bit more turns into running an fx 8300 and an r7 370 in 2022, and wondering why everything sucks what i love garbage.
