Shree Nayar at the World Maker Faire New York 2013

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Shree Nayar at the World Maker Faire New York 2013”.
I’M Sri nya, I’m a professor of computer science at Columbia University here at maker faire mi, i’m showing big short Big Shot, is a digital camera kit that you would put together yourself and in the process. You’Ll get exposed to a variety of science and engineering concepts, and so that would be the stem component of the experience once you’re done with it. You have a fully functioning digital camera and you enter the world of photography, storytelling and documentation, and so what’s unique about the kit is that it allows you to juxtapose and experience in the sciences with an experience in the arts and then finally, the pictures that you Capture with big shot, you can share with kids all over the world and that’s the cultural aspect of the experience, big short started as a project in my lab at columbia university. In the lab, we actually focus on building machines that can see, which is the area of computer vision and as a part of that, we also develop new types of cameras that produce new forms of visual information, mainly for high end applications. But Big Shot was a side project which was geared towards making more of a social impact in this case, in the realm of education, here is big shot. If you look at it from the front, it has this funky lens wheel, which has three different settings as the regular setting panoramic and stereo, and this what’s interesting about the camera is that lets say you were out in a shoot and you happen to run out Of charge, you can actually crank it up a few times and generate enough charge to actually take a few pictures. The whole idea here is to include features that would expose the kids to not just how a camera works, but rather a variety of science and engineering concepts related to the camera.

Now, when you turn it around, it’s completely bare and the idea is to then provoke discussion or conversation between Pierre .
