MAKE: Interview With Carla Diana

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “MAKE: Interview With Carla Diana”.
Okay, hi, i’m mark devink, i’m here at the make booth at engadget expand and i just ran into carla diana who we last saw at the hardware. Innovation, workshop and she’s told me about this new project she’s working on, and i am so excited to hear about it. So i’m going to let her describe it because she can do a lot better job than i can. Okay. Well thanks very much um.

The project is called leo, the maker prince and it’s a children’s book that lays out uh possible futures for 3d printing and it’s a story about a young woman who didn’t think she was creative until she meets a robot one day and the robot’s. Actually, a 3d printing robot, so his anatomy has a tail with a nozzle and he has spools of wire on his back and he has a tray that he holds and she just needs to know more about him. She’S completely fascinated – and he starts to tell her about some other robot friends who are different kinds of 3d printers and every story he tells is accompanied by an object and the object is featured in the book and then kids will be able to download that object And print it for themselves, so they’re actually holding the object while they’re reading about its story, oh wow, that sounds fantastic um any any. Can you give us any little tidbits of it or do you have anything? You can show us that maybe get a little sneak. Peek on what’s happening with the book yeah sure i can show you um. I have a little rough print out and um one of the first things that so the main character’s name is leo, and actually i can show you. This has a little handwriting on it, but i can show you what leo looks like as a plastic, 3d printed character himself. That looks fantastic um. What kind of printers did you use to actually model these and print them out for the buck? So i use a variety of printers and actually i was going for exposing kids to all different processes, but i used an affinia on my desktop for a lot of them. I also used a number of makerbots.

I also used a dimension printer um. I don’t remember the model as well as an object for one of them and there are a number of objects that are also printed through shapeways, that’s fantastic, so you really cover everything. I guess my last question is: when are we going to be able to buy this book because, having kids of my own, i just can’t wait to get it and start printing. These objects out cool.
