Live at SXSW: Mario Kart IRL

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Live at SXSW: Mario Kart IRL”.
There are a lot of big things happening here at South by Southwest, but I don’t think anything is big is what’s going on right behind me, this is Lindsey from Pennzoil. Can you tell me a little bit about what technology is being used around the track? Here? Absolutely we wanted this to be an innovative experience from the second you stepped crown on this activation. So it starts when you register and we get your name. We get your social media right. There you’re tagged with an rfid bracelet once you get in the cart.

That cart is actually matched up to your RFID bracelet and now you and the experience are tracked all throughout. So as your cart races throughout the track, there are five of the key penso pureplus icons scattered throughout the track. When you hit those five icons, you get a powerup just like the real mario kart experience, and then, when you hit the turtle shells on the track, we’re able to slow you down as well and then, as you actually move through the track. All of the graphics are RFID enabled on this Jumbotron screen back here and we’re actually able to send that video to you via social media right after the race is over.

That’S great now. Can we get a behind-the-scenes tour of what’s going on here, Matt? Obviously, that track is pretty impressive, but back here is where a lot of the magic is happening, that people don’t even get to see. I want to introduce you to get Danielle he’s got the controls back here, you’re gon na be pretty impressed and you see what’s inside this truck great thanks. This is Matt hi nice to meet you Danielle.

How are you good what’s going on in here? Lots of video lots of video when I come check it out. Let’S do it. This is where all our wireless cameras come in.

We have four cameras per race coming in wires through transmitters and in this room there we have the graphics, we quad split it to make it look like the video game and – and we also have triggers that are triggered by RFID. It will trigger the motion. Graphics over each individual racers, so it reacts like the video game and what you see is the quad split.

The final product is, you know, a video game, looking real life experience with all the motion, graphics of the new Mario Kart game. So that’s Russ our director. He is the octopus’s putting all the buttons and punching on every camera up and and delivering the final product all right back here. This is rfid world. There’S Matthew there he’s running all the triggers and all that, as each cart runs over the each icon. There’S sensors that get triggered and that triggered the motion.

Graphics is you can kind of see on the screen as they run over each icon? So that’s all run through here and then back over here we have Rosalie and Graham – and they are our editors and our final output text here, Graham, is adding all the sound effects and music from the game he’s putting the bumpers on and outputting a final file And then Rosalie here will then in turn gon na take the registration information from when they scan in and each racer will get their final race with all the motion: graphics, email to them with a download link and a youtube link for for sharing on social media. That was incredible: let’s go. Try it out all right. I’M Mario I’ve been briefed we’re ready to race.
