Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Curious Customs: Laser Cut Wood Lanterns”.
My name is marilee ratcliffe and i’m from austin texas. Our business name is curious customs and we make laser-cut lanterns they’re wooden lanterns made from solid monterey pine, backed with japanese shoji screen. So we started making large scale art with a cnc router. We made the temple for burning man in 2009 and found ourselves with this massive library of designs and because we burnt down our project, we had nothing to. You know show for all of these designs that we had in adobe illustrator, where we make our vector artwork.
So we took all of the design work we had and started making it in smaller form in these lanyards and we enjoyed it so much that we kept adding designs and new lantern forms and it just kept going from there yeah. We love it when people are drawn to our artwork because of the light we often say it’s like mobs to a flame people really like the warm glow and then all of our design work either has some cultural basis and significance. We pull artwork from all over the world different countries, or we also played more whimsical designs like this and we love learning which are people’s favorites. I love coming to maker faire because everyone is ready to make there’s an energy and a collected spirit of doing things together or teaching people how to do things so that they can do things on their own.
That is like nowhere else, and it’s really exciting to help people find what they want to do and to show them like ways to do it. And we love coming here to get new ideas and to show people new ideas and collaborate and inspire people to continue building on their own ideas. .
