DIY Hacks and How Tos Rain Chains

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “DIY Hacks and How Tos Rain Chains”.
This week, i’m going to show you how to make a set of rain chains for your house. Rain chains are a kind of decorative downspout that connects to your gutter system whenever it rains some of the water pours down over the chains and makes a long cascading waterfall for you to enjoy. The first step in setting up rain chains is to decide where you want to put them. I hung mine in front of my house next to the garage. Next, you need to figure out what to do with the water when it gets to the ground. I recommend setting up a rain barrel, now find a bunch of decorative cups, i’m using brass candle holders that i found at local thrift stores before we can hang the cups onto the chain. We need to drill a few holes. First, we need a hole in the bottom of the cups to run the chain through to make this you want to use a hole, saw that’s slightly wider than the chain. Next, we need to drill a pair of holes near the top of each cup that we can hang them from.

After cutting the holes. I scraped off the sharp burrs with a file. Then i used a grinding bit to smooth them off to prevent corrosion. I applied a sealer to all the cut surfaces to attach the cups.

We need a second smaller chain, i’m using brass plumber’s chain. First, i measured off a piece of chain that was about six inches long. Then i cut the two end links so that i could bend them into simple hooks.

Then i hooked each one through the holes on the top of the cup. If you’re happy with how this looks, then you’re ready to string them all together, start by feeding the chain through the holes in each cup, then loop, the smaller chain through one of the links and attach it to the cup on each side, then i used a Pair of pliers to crimp, the hooks onto the side of the cups continue this process until all the cups are mounted onto the chain. This is a lot easier.

If you have the chain hanging vertically, as you assemble them now, you need to cut a hole in the gutter to mount the chain and to let the water drain out rain chains can’t handle a lot of water, so i recommend keeping this hole small. I used an 11 16 hole saw to mount the chain. You need something to hook onto it.

On the top side of the gutter, i took one of the links from the chain and cut it in half i held the chain up to the bottom side of the hole in the gutter, and i hooked the half link through it on the top side, because The link was wider than the hole it was able to hold everything in place. Now your rain chains are complete whenever it rains you can enjoy, watching the water cascade over the chains and listening to the sound of a gentle waterfall thanks for watching and check back next week for more diy hacks and how to’s .
