Kate Hartman talks about wearables

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Kate Hartman talks about wearables”.
This is caleb with make we’re here at makercon in new york, and we have kate hartman the author of wearable electronics, that’s available in the maker shed now and also associate professor of wearable electronics at ocad university kate. It’S a pleasure to have you here. We just got out of your talk. That was amazing, and i would personally just like to ask you: what is it that you’re excited about in wearables like in the next two years or so? What do you see coming on the horizon that you’re excited about? I think, what’s going to be exciting, is getting over this hump of doing things, because we can and thinking more about uh. You know refining wearables in terms of their their their comfort and style and wearability. Okay. What would you like to see go away in the current trend in wearables like what? What can we stop doing? I think plastic.

Bracelets um, you know, overall, it’s uh. You know we’re kind of focusing. You know for good reason, but as as initial steps, we’re focusing on things that live on the wrist and things that live on the head. And i think those are you know interesting options in terms of places to locate technology on the body. But as we’re able to take a more refined approach and use smaller tools, i think it’s going to be interesting to see how the technology can kind of disappear into our existing clothing, as opposed to being these added on devices. That’S great, and during your talk you had some projects that involved people physically interacting with each other in real time, not just sharing how many steps they had taken, and i thought that was fantastic. Where can people go to learn more about some of these projects that you did and see these incredible like crazy, shoulder pads, you are showing that grow when people flex their muscles. Where can they learn about this uh? So we i’m part of i run.

A research group called the social body lab at ocad and uh. Just socialbodylab.com is where you can find information about our projects and we, you know, publish all about our. You know the different things we make, and some of them are diy, tutorials and uh. Some of them are just some really fun videos, cool cool.

Now this book, this book is just coming out. It’S available in the shed. What kind of things will people find in this book what’s this book about, so this book is about how to embed computing capabilities in your clothing um. So it starts from a very basic perspective of just kind of reconsidering circuits and how you can build circuits using a variety of conductive materials. But then it also moves you into thinking about what makes a circuit or technology wearable and then, ultimately, how you can move on to interactive and wireless capabilities that live in clothing. Great perfect, thank you very much for for explaining some of these things and showing some of these wearables that are completely outside of some of the other stuff we’ve seen, it’s just been incredible.
