MAKE @ Engadget Expand 2014: Hemingwrite

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “MAKE @ Engadget Expand 2014: Hemingwrite”.
Hello, my name is patrick paul. This is my partner, adam lee, and we’re here today to talk to you about the hemming right. The hamming right is a distraction, free writing tool. It combines the best aspects of the typewriter, long hand, journal and computer to deliver the single best writing experience. It combines the simplicity of a typewriter with all the convenience we’ve come to expect in 2014. It has a full-size mechanical keyboard, an e-paper display with a long battery life and automatic automated cloud backups.

Have you ever wondered? Why is it so difficult to get things done? Well, i think a lot of us know that we’re constantly being bombarded by things that are not very important, whether it’s facebook email twitter, it’s all coming at us at one time and it’s reminding us about the things that we’re not supposed to be doing. But that doesn’t make it any easier. The point is we created the hemming right to have none of those things.

No, facebook, no twitter, no email, it does one thing and it does it well writing. In the last month since entering the insert coin, competition we’ve been completely overwhelmed. With responses from people we’ve had over, a hundred thousand people come to our website. Fifteen thousand facebook shares we had no idea.

This was gon na happen and, as a result, we’ve had over eleven 000 people sign up for our pre-sale email sign up list with zero marketing dollars spent zero marketing dollars, we’re still running a stock. WordPress theme, it’s almost embarrassing. The great thing is that the press has been so wonderful to us.

We’Ve been covered from from guys all around the world and we’re just so lucky. So, as adam said, we’ve now had thousands of interactions on twitter and there’s there’s a real need for a distraction. Free writing tool, the fact so for for professional writers, who have already found the discipline or are already using decades-old writing tools um. They they understand this experience, but there’s a whole crop of people who who, in this day and age, haven’t been exposed to a distraction-free. Writing device.

They take their laptops to the library to write their college term papers and the first thing they do is they log onto facebook and tweet uh. You know, share the status that they’re at the library, so we know from all the attention you’re getting that. There’S a real need for this, and our next step is to produce our first generation product, and you know, with the support of of people at this uh convention, um going online voting for our product, we’ll be able to go into production uh. The exposure has been global.

I can even you know, tell you what she’s saying here, but i see a smiley face. I think we have another fan so we’re gon na switch to the elmo camera now and do a live demonstration. So we have the actual hemingway prototype up here on the stage and we’re gon na. Do a quick demo uh just turn it on here real quick. As you can see, it’s uh quite fast, i’m going to type in my email address and hit enter, and the best part about this is that you’re just greeted with a clean slate. So as soon as you want to start typing, you can start typing and if we could uh switch the ammo back to the display. So the beauty of this is that everything when you’re connected to wi-fi syncs to the cloud and when you’re not it, saves locally and waits for you to be connected again to phone home and from this web app we’re going to be able to uh. You know, add plugins to get the documents into the productivity tools that you already use.

So if we could switch back to the elmo, we have three folders it’s hard to see on the camera, because the contrast – but we have three different folders that are selectable on this left selector knob and as you can see, you can switch between them very easily And here’s another piece of writing that we can just pick up where we left off thanks adam back to the powerpoint, so we originally had this uh vision of a distraction-free writing tool for creative writers, but there’s been so much demand. Uh demonstrated in the interactions we’ve gained on twitter um that we’re excited to announce today that we’re opening the platform to developers to contribute third-party plugins. So you know developers even some of the people in this audience will be able to write their own integrations to add features like uh security.

You know end-to-end encryption, uh document, uh, formatting, uh, markdown, syntax, etc and finally um the entire. You know variety of storage back-ends, whether it’s google drive or you know, evernote we’re agnostic. Furthermore, we want you to be able to use your own specifically tailored productivity productivity, firmware to get the kind of macros or tab completion. You need in your writing tool um. The particular language you speak and the keyboard layout you use whether it’s dvorak or german, azure or qwerty, etc, and so a screenplay writer can write in plain text using a properly formatted uh document and end up with a with a very beautiful looking screenplay in their Evernote or or scrivener or cell tx uh we’re hamming right.
