Rubens’ Organ

Rubens' Organ

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Rubens’ Organ”.
My name is Michael Kearney. I have a company called minor capacity productions. I do custom fabrication, machining boats for things like prototyping and then people would come to me with a project and I build things for them. In this case, I’ve built a Rubens organ and a Rubens organ is a bank of Rubens tubes. They are Soundwave visualizers using flame.

We use the speaker on the end of a tube in order to change the pressure inside the inside the tube, which gives you peaks of sound in the flame, so you can actually see sound waves in the fire. It’S a very, very cool effect, the Rubies tubes. Actually or Rubens organ sorry is a bank of them. In this case I have five tubes and at the moment they’re not filtered, but once I get the programming done on the crossover they will actually be filtered, so each tube gets a frequency.

The resumes festival. This one is a traveling exhibit because it’s supposed to go around and go to festivals of like this music festivals and be a physics, demonstrator toy or nut Tori, but exhibit, and so it’s in a traveling case and it’s all electrically controlled. I have a control box here, that’s running an Arduino that controls solenoid valves and ignition systems. I’Ve got a regulator, so I can adjust the gas pressure reason and not a knob on the side of it right now.

I’Ve got it hooked up to a little synthesizer, because it’s a really fun way to interact with the piece you can walk up and push the keys and see the fire move, people freak out from across the yard. It’S like! Oh look at that thing. What’S that I want to push the button and it’s awesome. The other thing that’s kind of hilarious and I didn’t anticipate four – is a bunch of these kids are taking piano lessons which is awesome because they come up and actually play music, and you can see the way the fire changes based on how they’re playing – and it’s Been really fun, you can learn about it.

On the from gorilla science they’re, the group – that’s actually doing the outreach with this piece. They have a Babel website at gorilla, science.com and gorilla sciences coda UK .
