Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Wood Clocks by David West”.
I’M david west, i make sculptures that are kinetic sculptures that keep pretty good time um. The reason why they’re pretty good is because they’re only made out of wood everybody’s used to having perfect time, but these don’t keep perfect time. It’S pretty good! Well, this one here is one minute fast, a week, this one’s a little slow, but every time you move them, they get picky, so they take about a week to get used to their surroundings. I make these by cutting them out on a scroll, saw by hand.

Um one by one, each little each little tool is cut out individually. You generate your gears by software um, you print them out. You take the piece of paper.

You know cut it out with a pair of scissors and spray it with some spray. Tac put it on your substrate that you’re going to cut them, and then you just cut it out. On your saw a few years ago, we were doing some work at the south ward meeting hall in portsmouth new hampshire and that that building’s been around since 1860.

Something there’s an old mechanical clock up there, so i used to visit it and make video recordings of it and um. Then some years went by. We moved out here to california.

I was going through my laptop and all my stored, video and there it was. This is back in october and i’m like i’m gon na, do something about it. Today’S the day, i’m gon na do something so i started looking online, i found this guy clayton boyer bought some clock plans learned how he did it started, making my own designs.

The process has been so fun learning and um. You know you have some of these people all the older people. They love it.

They’Re, like. Oh, my gosh. I remember when i had my you know.

My grandmother had one of those and um you know and when you talk about how i do it with just the scroll saw they’re like no cnc, no laser cutter. Are you crazy? So you know they appreciate the length the time, the craftsmanship and all that, but enough people have voiced their opinion that maybe i shouldn’t bother with a laser cutter. Maybe i should just you know: do it with the way i’m doing it we’ll see? If this is a whole work in progress, so i don’t know .
