Darbin Orvar: Alphabet Rubber Stamps

Darbin Orvar: Alphabet Rubber Stamps

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Darbin Orvar: Alphabet Rubber Stamps”.
Hi guys, i’m lynn from the jarvan order youtube channel and today i’m going to make a set of custom, rubber stamps and a box to hold them in. So adding your own typeface print to various projects can add a really cool and you know interesting touch and then, after i made all of these stamps, i decided to make a small box to hold them all. So this is what i’m going to be doing today. Okay, well, every now, and then i like to sit down and carve some rubber stamps.

I prefer these soft easy to cut printing blocks which are really easy to use. So for this project i decided to make a set of letters so i’m starting with cutting out a series of square little pieces, one for each letter and i’m just using an x-acto knife on top of a cutting mat here once i had all these little pieces, I started out sketching letters and carving them out. I prefer to use an x-acto knife to mark out the lines and then i use a pretty blunt carving tool to remove the surrounding material to create the stamp so just moving along here and trying the stamps out.

As i make them to see what they look like now, i thought it would be fun to create a design free hand. However, you could certainly print out a font and then carve that design onto your stamp. However, piece of advice uh the more intricate the design of your letters, the more annoying to carve plus one of the drawbacks of using a softer carving material such as this one is that it also breaks somewhat easier than let’s say linoleum. So i try to stay away from too thin and too delicate designs, and i really like the fact that they are not too perfect and, of course, you have to remember to mirror your letters, something that slipped my mind a few times, or else your prince will Be backwards – and this is just really kind of relaxing quite a fun project and of course, you can carve out anything.

I happen to go with letters, but you can make whatever design you’d like once i had all the letters carved. I went out and cut up some mdf in little pieces. It’S really nice to have something to hold on to when using your print in here, i’m cutting half inch mdf now to be able to see which prints are which i’m first printing each block. With the letter it will be attached to and then i’m simply attaching each stamp to each block with some contact cement and they’re ready. Okay.

So let’s move on to the box. So here i’m thinking about the size i want and taking some measurements. I had some pretty thin pine, so just cutting that to size and seeing what it’s going to look like for the joinery, i thought it would be nice to make some box joints also called finger joints.

This is one of my favorite joints very simple, yet strong. So making my marks all across then using this divider to walk across the divisions of the joints, bringing down the lines and repeat a couple of times. Then i’m putting the wood in the vise clearing the marks and then cutting the lines with a rip saw also making a couple of relief cuts on the parts that are going to be chiseled out later and being careful not to go below my mark. Next, i’m using a small chisel to remove the waste now time to transfer the lines to the other pieces and repeating the process of cutting and chiseling.

Once i had all the pieces cut, it was time to glue them together, so making sure i have good glue contact in all the joints, checking for square and then lightly clamping while it dries. Meanwhile, i added a few thin pieces of walnut together to create a top. Then, once the box had dried, i sanded it down to get it nice and smooth, and then i marked out how large i needed the lid to be. I wanted a slight overhang so accounting for that here then i took it out to the bandsaw and cut the piece to size to remove any tool marks and square it up, i’m using my number four plane and to create a chamfer on the edge i’m using My mini plane then sanding it nice and smooth.

Now i want the lid to pressure fit so i’ve got some thin 8 inch baltic birch plywood here. So i’m just marking out the inside of the box and cutting to size. I’M also cutting up a second piece for the bottom, then gluing, the plywood onto the walnut and making sure i’m getting good glue contact, adding a little weight here while it sets up. I also cut up some small squares out of the leftover walnut and this will act as feet for the box, so sanding them smooth and then gluing them on the corners. Then, once they’re dry, i’m adding some glue and attaching the bottom piece. So they also act as cleats to hold the bottom in place to finish the box. I’M simply adding some of my linseed oil wax polish, which adds a nice and smooth finish, and i like it because the finish is ready immediately, so no time necessary to cure or dry. So, let’s put all the letters in the box and see if they fit. Okay looks good, so this is just one of a number of ways that you can make these types of stamps, and this is a pretty soft carving surface that i got.

I picked this up at an art supply store, but then you can also buy linoleum and they come in different grades. I really like the softer kind because it’s really easy to carve, and so it’s really safe for children to use and they’re. Just like a lot of fun, you can do all sorts of projects with these oh yeah and then i also added you know piece of mdf like a block on top of each stamp and you can use whatever. But i found that it’s really useful to add something to hold on to because it makes for a cleaner print, which is really nice and then, of course, if you make a collection of something like i have the alphabet here, then it’s just pretty nice to you Know have something to keep them all in one place, which is why i decided to you know: throw together um a very simple box and you can make a box in many different ways: um so yeah. My name is lynn.
