Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Watch the mesmerizing undulations of a giant mechanical squid”.
Yeah, my name is barry crawford and my piece is called macintosh is a giant mechanical swing. Magnetothis is just adding mecca to architeuthis, which is the scientific name of the giant squid species uh. When people turn the cranks, it sends a signal to an arduino computer and the computer controls the motors which uh drive the mechanical movements of the piece. The arms and tentacles are actually a much simpler mechanism than they first appear, and they just consist of a bent rod which rotates and the shells conform to that rod, causing an illusion of a more sophisticated motion.
This project has taken me somewhere upwards of 2 000 hours and that will number one continue to grow. Go up as i get more and more done to it. I was provided with a grant by burning man, arts foundation to uh help me afford to build this piece and also some generous donate donors from a crowdfunding campaign. Uh helped me finance it as well. I i do like to use a lot of um repurposed and found objects in my work on a piece like this with a lot of moving parts. Generally 90 of the work of the parts will be hand fabricated by me, which is the case here and with a smattering of found objects through where they look right. For instance, this has some bottle caps for the suction cups, as well as vegetable steamers.
