Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Lowriders Are a Perfect Mesh of Engineering and Craftsmanship”.
This is day two of maker faire kc, i’m out here. It’S like 95 degrees out here, uh in front of the union station and behind me is one of the things that makes this one of my favorite maker faires ever and that is the car show. I don’t think i’ve been to another maker faire with a car show there might be one, but i haven’t been to it. These folks do incredible amounts of custom work to these cars. These cars are their lives and it shows. Let me explain to you why i think that a car show is a perfect fit for maker faire.
As you walk around and look at these cars you’ll see incredible amounts of custom work from the paint jobs which are absolute pieces of art to interiors. That are hand stitched to match the visions of the creator. Then you have custom, electronics, crazy, fabrication and, of course, the most exciting part.
The part that draws the biggest crowd, the hop off where engineering hits the ground and you have hydraulic systems launching these cars into the air over the heads of the spectators. Do so what goes into making your car hop right? I mean it’s. It’S a lot of work check out this check out this setup. This is the the back end of the hydraulic setup.
You got your batteries here, all wired in series up to two different pumps. These pumps are just your standard, hydraulic pump, pretty much but custom for the cars of course, and these are going to the hydraulics underneath the car, your entire, your entire uh undercarriage, has to be modified, cut chopped. Let’S go look at the undercarriage and see what has to be done there check this out.
This is obviously not your standard car suspension. This has all been cut. We’Ve got joints put in for your hydraulics all kinds of stuff going on under here. These cars are insanely, customized, there’s nothing standard on a lot of these, just really cool stuff. You probably already noticed some of these paint. Jobs are pretty crazy. Let’S talk about paint for a second. A lot goes in to one of these really cool paint jobs check out this 73 chevelle back here. Let me see if i can get in closer and you can see some of this cool paint work kind of hard to see on camera there.
But what this is is lace work. They literally lay a piece of lace onto the car, they paint over it, they spray over it, and then they peel the lace back off and it leaves the pattern of the lace now, if you’ve ever done, automotive painting, you know a lot of work goes into A regular paint job you have to sand the entire car with multiple levels of sandpaper, multiple smoothnesses of sandpaper, and when you do something like this, you have to do it several times between new layers. Each time look at this work, this lace work is incredible, see if we can get down here and get a view of it just absolutely gorgeous stuff, and that’s it that’s why i love the car show at the kansas city maker faire.
