Make Workshop: Practice your welding with this kit

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Make Workshop: Practice your welding with this kit”.
Welcome back to make workshop where we check out tech tools and toys built for makers. Today we have a really cool project. I’M excited to show you. This is a DIY welding kit from 42 fab. What they do is they cut out the pattern and flat pack ship you a project that you weld together yourself. In this case it is a rocket stove. You get all the parts you assemble them yourself, you weld them together following the instructions and in doing so you improve your welding skills.

I talked to Richard over 42 fab a little bit about this whenever he gave me the kit last year, and he explained that you know there – were there weren’t many opportunities out there for people to get better at welding like we have at the Maker Faires. We have the learn to solder badges where you practice your soldering skills, but there really wasn’t much for welding. You can learn how to weld, but there are projects that are ready-made easily available, that you can just pick up and weld together to improve your skills, and this one just happens to fit perfectly on that now, you’ll notice, my parts look pretty marred up and beaten Up and that’s because I stored this whenever he gave it to me in an area that got wet, but luckily hey it’s metal, you can see it it down and clean it up and you should clean it up before you weld it anyway. So you get these parts flat pack to you, you cut out the pieces and you weld it together and, as Richard explained to me, there’s a number of different angles here: different types of welds inside corners outside corners and stuff, like that that are really good to Practice on – and this is thin enough – that I can do it even with my dirt cheap beginner welder Richard – was cool enough to offer a discount to people watching this video. If you use the code make in all capital letters he’ll give you 10 % off anything. You buy, I believe, is going to keep that up for about a month after this video publishes.

So you can go check out the kits that they have they’re for sale. They have these little rocket stoves for 48 dollars and then he’s got some bigger, fancier kits that are, you know, different type of fire pits that are really cool-looking. So what I’d like to do is put this together and practice. My welding skills, I’m not a very good welder, and hopefully, by the time I get done with this I’ll, be better, and so here it is. I got plenty of practice on my welds. I definitely saw as I was going along.

My welds got better. I got I figured out what settings to put it at, but, as you can see, I wasn’t joking when I said that I am a horrible welder. The next step in this process is to actually spray paint this with like a high temp spray paint to keep it from rusting or something like that.

But I wanted to leave it there so that you could see just how horrible my welding and grinding is and that’s important, because what this is is a practice piece. This is so you can hone your skills. This isn’t a kit designed to be the absolute best rocket stove there could possibly be.

This is just so. You can improve your skills and I think it did that and I I think I would like to see you know other kids to like sculptural pieces or you know, functional metal stuff. I don’t know I I just.

I don’t really have anything. I need to weld to get better, but I had fun doing this. I know that again, you can find this and the other kits that they have at 42 fab comm and for a period of time after this video, if you use make in all capital letters for your discount code, you’ll get 10 % off .
