Make:'s Guide to Boards has an AR secret hiding inside

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Make:’s Guide to Boards has an AR secret hiding inside”.
Hi this is mike sinisi executive editor for make magazine, and today i’m going to show you one of my favorite things that we’ve worked on this year. It’S a little bit of an easter egg. Earlier this year, we released make volume 68, which covers the latest in microcontrollers and single board computers, talks about how to use them in your projects and so forth, and as a bonus for our readers, we teamed up with our pals at digikey to produce an insert That gives all the specs and details on over 70 of these boards. We also did uh some highlights on standout boards and a featurette by adafruit about how a board is conceived and actually comes to life, but the fun part is what a lot of people don’t know is that this guide to boards has a hidden secret. It’S embedded with augmented reality content if you use your smartphone or your tablet and you scan over this guide to boards the content pops up off of the page and gives you a lot more information and allows you to dive in much deeper than what you get Just with the guide alone, it feels like magic and it might be magic, but rather than talking about it, why don’t i show you so? The first thing you want to do is get the app for this. I’M going to use this tablet and get it from the app store, i’ll search for digi key, and it’s called the digikey ar boards guide. You can see it here, pops right up and i’ll click this to install takes just a moment. While it’s installing, you can see five stars, you’ve got other key content down below and once it’s done installing, let’s go ahead and open it. Okay, the app’s going to ask you to use the camera. You have to say yes to this, because the camera is what allows you to have that augmented reality. Content come to life and once you’ve got that app installed, let’s go ahead and flip open to that guide to boards here, and you can see there’s so much good information inside of this we’ve got micro controllers. All this data in these tables we’ve got our standout boards on the side bar here, more microcontrollers and standouts, and on this section here, we’ve got the single board, computers and the fpgas plus that feature at by lamorfried from adafruit about how a board actually comes to Be super super useful helps makers figure out what is the right board for the projects they’re working on and just really it’s it’s incredible, but let’s zoom out here, so you can see how this comes to life once you bring that digikey app over the uh over The board guide itself – and it’s just so neat you can see here these boards suddenly pop right off of the screen. We’Ve got the adafruit feather m4 express and you can rotate and spin this to see what it looks like from all sides and angles. The arduino maker, wi-fi 1010 we’ve got the raspberry pi model 3a plus, and then, if you tap these you’ll see there is expansion board options that come out. So it really gives you a lot of information about what you can do with these boards. Uh.

What you might want to learn about them and then links that will shoot you over to even more content about them. It’S it’s so cool! This continues on the next page, with the asus tinker board with the pocket, beagle tiny fpga. These are standouts and uh. Even more uh standout boards that have links here, but this part’s super fun, now check this out. Hey everybody! It’S me, lady ada, i’m here at adafruit, but i’m beaming into your home through your device.

I’M going to tell you all about how i take my ideas from prototype to production. First thing you got to do is get that idea now. The way i get my idea is, i actually check the new products at digikey.com, so i know all the newest, sensors and drivers and micro isn’t that crazy. I just love what this does and i love that it gives makers another opportunity to find ideas and inspiration for their projects. It’S been super fun, working on it with digikey they’re, incredible partners of ours for this, and for so many other things that we’re doing, and i’m really looking forward to 2020, where we’ve got a lot more coming up. That is going to be really exciting. For you guys, but first make sure get this app and go have some fun with it.
