Meet the M5 Stick: An IOT platform on your wrist

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Meet the M5 Stick: An IOT platform on your wrist”.
Welcome to make workshop where we check out tools, toys and tech built for makers today, we’re going to play with the m5 stick all right. So, let’s check this thing out. I’Ve got the stats on their website pulled up here. Let’S open it up and see what we’ve got. This is the m5 stick c development kit, it’s about 15 bucks on their site, it’s kind of like a develop. Your own iot watch kind of thing. Let’S check it out inside the container. Here we have the m5. Stick itself comes on a watch band.

You have an extra mounting bracket for other uses, a couple extra mounting brackets usb c charging and programming cable and a couple add-ons we’ll get to those in a bit the m5 stick c. I believe this is the plus development kit. So what do we have here? Well, this is the brains behind the operation. This is the m5 stick, it’s kind of an all-in-one little iot development platform.

It’S based on the esp32 we’ll get into stats in just a second. Let’S explore the rest of this, this is a d-class amplifier and speaker, and it plugs right into the end here and then this is an environmental sensor that does temperature and humidity, maybe barometric pressure, i believe so and then also has kind of a compass magnetic sensing Etc, i know that they have within their ecosystem. They have even more of these little modules that you can plug into it. Now, looking at the device, i like how it feels it’s all injection, molded um, not like 3d printed pieces, then again, 3d printed would have been fine. I guess uh. I really like this here this sticker on the back. It really shows you tons of stuff here. It shows what the plugs are on your grove, connector.

What the plugs are on your uh expansion header up here gives a basic breakdown of some of the features you have. You know at your disposal on this. We’Ve got an lcd here, let’s uh, let’s look at the stats, as they’re listed on the m5 stack website. The features on this listed on their website are a 5 volt dc power supply. I think that means it runs off of 5 volts, of course, usb type-c plug the esp32 brains, 4 megabytes flash a 6-axis imu for detecting. You know what angle it’s at red, led for status displays an infrared transmitter microphone, two buttons which you’ve got back here. There is a button up here. It doesn’t list in this in the settings we’ll get to that. I think it just changes the brightness or you could probably program it to do whatever 2.4 g antenna 80 milliamp hour, lipo battery extendable socket the grove port. It is, of course wearable and wall mountable, and you can program this with ui flow micro python and your basic arduino development platform. Let’S plug it in and see if it’ll power up, i’m not going to try to program anything on it, we’re just going to see what it does right off the bat from the factory usbc there and we’ll go into my laptop here and we’ll just see what We get in five, stick wi-fi test and it is booting up and we are getting a readout on the display here. We go we’re just adjusting the display with that button and it looks like we’re getting data up and down through wi-fi testing our connection. The button on the side here turns on that led turns it back off. That button doesn’t appear to be doing anything.

Oh this little line here as i shift it seems to be moving. So i’m guessing that’s an accelerometer or the imu. You know that’s the fun of these kits is, of course, digging in and developing your own stuff. So that’s! The m5 stick looks to be pretty cool at 15 bucks. It’S kind of hard to beat something like this as far as value goes go to their website. M5Stack.Com and check out this they’ve got other modules that you can plug into it.

Then they have the m5 stack as opposed to the m5 stick, which is a larger unit that has a bunch more uh modules that can be plugged into that for developing your own iot stuff. M5. Stick pretty neat! So thank you for joining us. I hope you had a fun time and thank you for joining us be sure to like and subscribe to this website click that little notification bell, while you’re at it, so that you get an email.
