So you won’t miss any future videos, so you dropped a few hundred bills on a shiny, new smartphone and at first you were thrilled with how great the photos look. The crispness of the screen and, of course, how fast it was, then you fast forward a year or two and you’re once top of the line phone feels like it just had a giant turkey dinner and was ready to pass out in the back seat on the Way home I mean, can you imagine if your car, for example, struggled to go from zero to 60 a couple of years after you drove it off the lot? I mean. How does this happen? Well, there are a number of reasons for it, but a big one stems from something that you probably see on your phone multiple times a week.
You know how your phone often notifies you in the morning about how many apps had updated while it was charging overnight. Well, just like software for a desktop PC, mobile, app updates, often add new features which require ever more processing power and developers know that as phone manufacturers keep coming out with more powerful hardware, they can take advantage of it to write more feature, packed apps. This also means, though, that older phones can get left behind quickly as their hardware.
Just can’t keep up with the demands of the newer versions of your favorite software, and a related problem is the operating system itself. Os updates are also tuned to take advantage of newer models due to the ever-expanding list of features that they aim to support. Also, they tend to end up optimized for the most recent devices.
Since that’s where the smart phone makers are generating much of their revenue. Think, for example, about how Apple makes a big deal about how new iOS releases give different kinds of functionality to hardware that is only found in the latest and greatest iPhones. The unfortunate thing is that app and OS updates are largely out of your control.
They hit your phone by default whenever a new version is available – and I mean you can turn these updates off, but I wouldn’t recommend it because they also contain important security updates. However, one thing that may be slowing your phone down that you do have some control over is how many apps you have installed with storage sizes, phone feature sets and download speeds, increasing it’s easy to have dozens or even hundreds of third-party apps installed on your phone And not even realize it having so many apps installed can slow your phone down in two ways. One certain apps can load up code.
That runs in the background when you start up your phone, which can use up processor cycles and RAM to as the amount of free space that you have remaining on. Your device decreases. The solid-state storage inside your phone slows down because its operating system has to work harder to find pieces of free space to write new data to now.
Although this kind of file fragmentation isn’t nearly as much of a concern on solid-state phone storage, as it would be with a spinning, hard drive, it can still be noticeable, and this also applies if your phone is filled with things other than apps, I mean how many Old videos or photos of where you parked at the mall do you have in your pocket that you just never bother deleting. So if your phone is intolerably slow, transferring media to cloud storage and then removing apps that you don’t need anymore as well as deleting cached data, are good first steps. If you’re more of an enthusiast, though well, there are active community developers who have worked very hard to bring modern OS versions to older Android hardware without some of the bloat. If you’ve got an old and slow Galaxy s3, for example, and you’d like to breathe some more life into it, it might be worth a little pop in over at xda-developers, but not before. You hit up eBay for a new battery. If you do have an aging phone, you’ve also probably noticed that the battery life isn’t what it used to be, and this can affect both how long it lasts in between charges and even its performance.
You may not know that batteries resist current flow as they get older, causing them to heat up. If your phone’s internal temperature gets too hot, it can cause it CPU to throttle slowing things down. Batteries also lose some of their maximum capacity over time, which has led to creative solutions from companies like Apple, where they admitted to slowing down older phones to ensure that while performance did suffer battery life would stay similar to when the device was noon.

The bottom line is that between apps that continually demand both more CPU performance and storage, space and batteries that wear out in a few years, it’s almost like the deck is stacked against you, so that you’ll feel compelled to keep buying new phones.
