Is Xiaomi the new Huawei?

Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “Is Xiaomi the new Huawei?”.
[ Applause ], the smartphone market, is incredibly competitive. Smartphone manufacturers are constantly battling to create the most sought after smartphones and generate the most sales. There are some standout and relatively stable top five players. We’Ve got xiaomi oppo, samsung, huawei and apple, and these are the ones that you’re going to see making the phones that make it into the top 10 most sold before huawei’s trade ban fiasco. It was on track to beat out samsung for the top spot, the biggest smartphone manufacturer on the planet.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go quite as planned. Huawei did manage a jump in sales for q2 of 2020, but this was only really down to the unprecedented circumstances. With kovid 19 that saw a big shift in the market overall, with huawei out of the picture, at least for now, whilst uh china and the us kind of get their stuff together is xiaomi able to take that huawei spot and overall become the biggest smartphone manufacturer. Let’S have a look at that: well, the firm revealed its financial results for q3 of 2020 and it shows a colossal 45 year-on-year growth according to counterpoint research, huawei sort of reported 24 drop in shipments year on year in the same quarter. That 45 isn’t a throwaway statistic either. Second place was samsung with just a two percent jump and the other three in the top five. Well, they all saw declines. It looks like xiaomi has now passed.

Huawei in global market share and in the process has become the most popular chinese brand and he’s got some solid momentum. In the past couple of years, xiaomi has focused its efforts on huawei’s traditional stomping grounds, namely europe, the middle east and africa. In fact, xiaomi put out a slide recently saying that it was in the top five in 54 markets globally and the top in 10 of those xiaomi’s strategy of casting a wider net outside of china to build up its user base has clearly worked.

It’S reported that overseas revenue now accounts for 55 of its total revenue, which is more than its own in the domestic market. This is a strategy that huawei has commonly used up until this point and seems to work for them too. It seems to be taking up that space that huawei phones would have if they had google play services.

Xiaomi is definitely taking advantage of that void in the market. One area that xiaomi has always kind of trailed behind with is in its premium smartphone segment. Sure the me 8 and me 9 have been pretty great, affordable flagships. In fact, we gave the me 10 t pro a pretty glowing review for it being a well-balanced, affordable flagship, but none of these are out to compete with the likes of the s20 ultra and the iphone 12 pro max. Xiaomi, of course, did come out with the me 10 ultra, which could challenge the most premium smartphones out there with some incredible specs, but that was a china only release and it was a limited run. So it wasn’t really able to complete, on a larger scale, with the ultra premium flagships, the phone managed to get three of its devices in the top 10 smartphones sold globally in q3 of 2020.

But what you’ll notice is that all three of these are more budget orientated devices aimed at those looking to save some cash. This goes for all, but one of the smartphones in the entire list, actually with the slightly more flagship, focused iphone 11 taking the top spot. There’S definitely room for improvement and, importantly, room for xiaomi to grow its product stack and user base. This is especially hopeful, given that the other two manufacturers with phones in the top 10 also offer ultra premium flagships, where xiaomi largely doesn’t so with its huge momentum and large product library and, more importantly, access to basically the whole of the world’s market. Xiaomi does seem to be on track to gain that top spot and really hold it, and maybe even pull out elite. However, that all hinges on the us and huawei’s relationship xiaomi definitely found itself in the right place at the right time to get where it is.

Now and to be basically at the top spot, but things aren’t going to be easy going forward, especially if huawei does get trade back in the us. And so we don’t know if they’re really going to be able to hold on to it. But what we want to ask is your guys opinion. What do you think? Do you think we’ll see real me saw to the top? Do we think that samsung is going to keep the top spot for a long time, yet is why we gon na come back? Are they not gon na come back is xiaomi coming back?
