Hi, this is Wayne again with a topic “2019 iPad mini vs Amazon Fire HD 8”.
What’S up folks how’s it going, this will watch hope you guys are all doing well, so we’ve been doing some testing and playing around with the new fifth generation ipad mini for 2019.. Internally, it’s exactly the same as the new generation ipad air, it’s just in a smaller 7.9 inch screen form factor which is definitely going to be a little bit more portable. Now, what i’m interested in seeing how it compares against other miniature popular tablets out there, namely the amazon fire hd 8 inch version which came out late 2018. It cost only a fraction of the price about 80 dollars compared to the 3.99 starting price of the new generation mini, and what we’re gon na do is basically give you guys a breakdown in terms of what you get with the ipad.
What you get with a more budget-friendly miniature tablet. First things: first in terms of design and form factor, you can see that the ipad mini is not as tall as the amazon fire hd8, but it is a little bit wider. It’S much thinner at around 6.1 millimeters versus 9.7 millimeters, also quite a bit lighter at around 300 grams versus about 363 grams on the fire hd8.
Now, when it comes to the fit and finish and build materials, the mini is uh equipped with a unibody aluminum grade chassis, which definitely feels really nice in the hand. Now, even though the amazon fire tablet is made up primarily cheaper grade plastics, i do like the fact that it has a non-slip a rubberized finish at the back, making operating with one hand a lot easier and less likely to slip out of your hand. Unlike the ipad mini, which has a slick aluminum surface at the back now, as you can see, the displays themselves in terms of actual size are very similar, 7.9 versus 8 inch, but there’s a huge difference in terms of resolution overall quality of the display uh. Certainly, the ipad has everything going for it. It has a much higher native resolution, a higher pixel density count of about 324v versus about 189 on the amazon tablet, as well as a much better color accuracy it’s brighter and has a better viewing angles in pretty much all direction and vantage points. Although from a pure utilitarian standpoint, the amazon fire tablet has a passable display, but definitely not something you would expect to see on a device made in 2018 2019 and going further versus the mini definitely has a more modern display by most standards.
Now. Another huge difference is the internal specifications we’re using the apple a12 bionic six core processor on the mini, the same as the bigger ipad air, which also comes equipped with a four core graphics and about three gigabytes of ram, and you have 64 to 256 gigabytes. In terms of internal storage capacity, the amazon fire hd has a very underpowered quad-core processor clocking about 1.3 gigahertz, and it has about 1.5 gigabytes of ram and the storage options are 16 and 32 gigabytes. Thankfully, you do have a micro, sd expansion slot located on the tablet, so you can easily upgrade that yourself, which is nice now from a user experience standpoint. One of the biggest problems i had with the amazon fire hd 8 is the fact that it’s very sluggish in its operation. It’S using uh an android 7 base uh currently, and then they have an amazon fire os 6 skin.
On top of that, so there’s definitely a lot of bloatware. It’S essentially designed to get you to buy more amazon products, whether that’s streaming, video on their amazon, prime service or purchasing items on their gigantic ecommerce website, and i understand that to subsidize the hardware price they pretty much have to integrate. All these features from a business standpoint, but actually using this tablet on a day-to-day basis, can be quite frustrating because applications tend to take a long time to load up. Even web searches can be quite frustrating due to the hardware limitations and the overall speed and fluidness of the os and uh user. Ui is definitely lacking, definitely not as slick as what you’re going to counter with higher end android tablets and indeed with ios tablets. Like the ipad mini over here, there’s just a demonstrate on how big of a performance gap there is between the apple a12, bionic and uh the processor that we have in the amazon fire hd8. Looking at the geekbench result over here we’re getting basically a fraction of the score on the multi-core and single core performance on the amazon fire, hd you’re, looking at only around 621 points on the single core score and about 1600 points, or so on. The multi-core performance and we’re looking at over 4 800 points on just the single core performance on the a12 bionic and over 11 000 points on the multi-core performance, so the a12 bionic is up there with some of the best performing tablets on the market. Right now, even though it’s super compact and it even rivals the performance of budget-oriented laptops designed for general web browsing and word processing and things like that, so definitely very powerful, and that’s one of the reasons why it costs more than four times the price of the Amazon fire hd8. Furthermore, if we examine the cameras on the amazon fire hd, you can see that they’re fairly rudimentary only 2 megapixels, both on the front and rear side capable of shooting about 720p hd video at 30 fps versus we have eight megapixels on the back.
Seven megapixels on the front and capable of shooting 1080p at 30fps on the ipad, as you can see from the side by side image uh comparison over here, there’s a massive difference between the two, which is definitely not surprising, and one of the reasons again why you Pay so much more for the ipad mini now. Luckily, one of the redeeming factors about the fire hd 8 is its battery performance. It has a fairly large capacity that they’ve upgraded for 2018, going into 2019 of 47 50 milliamp hours, giving you a rough estimate about 10 hours of usage according to amazon and according to apple, the 2019 5th gen ipad mini will also give you about 10 hours Of usage based on its 51 24 milliamp hour battery, based on our user experience, i average around eight hours of real world usage on uh, the amazon fire hd 8 versus. I got anywhere between 9 to 11 hours on the ipad mini 5th generation, which is good to see so sometimes apple, actually under promises, their battery performance, which is the case for the mini based on our experience. But the awesome thing is, if you’re buying a small tablet uh to fly with you on long journeys or just something for kids to play. Videos on this is definitely an excellent solution from amazon, and certainly you can’t beat the price at around eighty dollars compared to spending over four hundred dollars for the mini.
Certainly, from a price perspective, you could almost buy five of the amazon fire hd eights compared to one of the minis and uh. If you just want a simple utilitarian budget friendly miniature tablet, definitely an excellent option, although you are going to pay for some extra features on the mini which might be worth it. If you want the better display, better camera internal capabilities, all those things we talked about, it certainly has its place. But besides that guys, that’s really. It definitely love to hear your thoughts, and i definitely want to hear your recommendation on what other miniature tablets that are out there right now that are good competitors for the ipad mini.
